Position Description:

The Foreman directs the day-to-day activities of carpenters and/or laborers and the on-going decision-making pertaining to project planning and production. The Foreman preplans work for a crew, provides training opportunities for craft persons and oversees safety procedures, quality of workmanship, production costs, and the morale and attitude of the crew.  The Foreman oversees individual projects to include managing the permit and inspection process and attending and conducting regularly scheduled progress meeting

Essential Functions of Foreman Position

Must be physically fit to perform manual labor in all types of environments and conditions, including heavy lifting (in excess of 50 lbs.). Other physical requirements include sitting, walking, climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling.  Specific vision abilities required by the position include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Foreman Responsibilities

  • Blueprint reading, layout and planning of the day-to-day work to perform specific carpentry or other related tasks that ascertain that an appropriately sized crew remain productive.
  • Ensuring that all projects are performed in accordance with contractual and quality standards.
  • Establishing and enforcing standards of workmanship that meet the projects requirements that are consistent with industry best-practice.
  • Working with the crew to accomplish the task, including teaching and mentoring individuals in the crew that are less experienced.
  • Scheduling and directing the daily activities of work and taking necessary action to assure that the project objectives of cleanliness, safety, price, schedule, quality and process are met.
  • Maintaining tools, cords and equipment so that they are kept in good working order and are safe for use.
  • Maintaining the work area(s) in a clean and orderly manner on a continuous basis.
  • Maintaining daily paperwork such as timecards, field reports, schedule updates and E-mail correspondence to keep the various people involved with the project informed of important issues.
  • Coordinating the work with the project superintendent, subcontractors and others that are involved in the process.
  • Implementing incremental project schedules that make sure upcoming events are on track and are being proactively attended to.
  • Promoting and maintaining a culture that values safety, health and cleanliness.
  • Conducting and/or attending pre-construction, progress and other project and staff meetings.
  • Understanding the sequencing of work.
  • Creating list of materials, supplies, specialty tools and equipment (proactively) that are needed to perform the work.
  • Filling out timecards; enforcing work hours, dress codes and other personnel related matters.
  • Participating in training and other forms of development to strengthen technical, safety and supervisory skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A.S. Degree in Construction Management or similar Degree with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience or a minimum of 10 years of direct experience without a degree.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of direct experience and a solid working knowledge of commercial construction (i.e.: concrete formwork, drywall framing and hanging, general construction, etc.).
  • Understands means and methods of construction associated with concrete formwork, drywall framing and hanging, and overall interior and exterior building construction.
  • The ability to read blueprints and specifications, to create material lists and to fill out timecards and other minor record keeping tasks.
  • Experience in supervising a direct hire workforce and subcontractors.
  • Extensive knowledge of the trades and the work involved, along with an ability to resolve problems with appropriate and timely decisions.
  • Understands the sequencing of work and the strategy of creating effective project schedules.
  • Understands how to effectively staff self-performed work activities to achieve levels of productivity that meet or exceed
  • Interpersonal competencies that include a drive for results, the need for closure, effective oral communication skills, organization, planning, trust, respect and cooperation.
  • Current safety credentials to include OSHA 30, 1st Aid and CPR.
  • Working knowledge of computer software used in the construction industry.
  • Ownership of all hand tools that are required to perform any task contemplated.
  • Must be able to be issued a badge to work at the project sites that have this requirement; and
  • Current and valid driver’s license with clean driving record.
