Job Description

Advanced Materials Solutions (AMS) provides global expertise in front-end innovation acceleration, ecosystem scouting, opportunity de-risking, core adhesive technologies, coatings and novel film chemistry.

Avery Dennison is seeking a dynamic individual to join the Advanced Material Solutions (AMS) team, a global R&D team within the Materials Group business unit.  The Research Scientist will advance the organization with leading new technology development, proof of concept studies, and identification of external innovation opportunities specifically for thermally and electrically insulative materials for emerging markets.  Expertise in synthesis, formulation and testing of polymeric materials is considered a plus.

 

Collaboration across regional product development teams, commercial leaders and operations is expected. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated history of technical coaching and mentoring within a diverse team.  Being able to connect emerging market and customer needs to new technology development projects is also considered a plus.  


 

Representative Activities:

  • Lead project teams developing technologies or products to support business needs in energy storage applications.
  • Development of project milestones, resourcing needs, timelines and investment
  • Identify emerging technologies in the ecosystem and vet technical readiness and feasibility 
  • Update and make recommendations to R&D and business leadership on platform progress.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate experiments and associated testing 
  • Supervise and coach junior technicians and scientists.
  • Expand core technology through careful study of the literature, new scientific discovery, external development and development of intellectual property.
  • Transfer knowledge to fellow scientists and business leaders via presentations, technical reports and day-to-day interaction.
  • Maintain an accurate lab notebook and records.
  • Actively participate in process safety management and employee safety programs to help drive continuous improvement. 

 

Qualifications

Education:

  • BS, MS or PhD with 5+ years of research or industry experience (can include academia) in chemistry, polymer science, materials science or materials engineering

 

Considered a Plus:

  • Experience with thermally or electrically insulative materials
  • Knowledge of materials and chemistry within batteries or energy storage systems 
  • Synthesis, formulation and structure property studies of polymeric materials
  • Technology and IP landscaping
  • Project management experience utilizing Stagegate or Agile methodologies
  • Use of artificial intelligence and/or machine learning in materials development 
  • Leading, mentoring and developing scientists

 

Other:

 

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal & written communication skills
  • Well-developed time management skills with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to foster creativity/innovation while ensuring project progress and lab efficiency
  • Experience with laboratory safety, chemical hazards, and full understanding of Safety Data Sheets 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage changing priorities
  • Potential travel 10-20% of time
