Job Description

Rowman & Littlefield is seeking Editorial Interns to work with our editorial team at our headquarters in Lanham, MD. We are looking for ambitious students who have a strong desire to learn about the publishing industry and the drive to grow professionally. The ideal candidate is eager to step in and help with any task or assignment, no matter how big or small, and is detail-oriented, with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Students should also have strong research skills, the ability to prioritize in a busy environment, and a team-oriented attitude.

Students in all majors will be considered; academic credit from an accredited institution of higher education must be available to all who apply for this unpaid opportunity.

Interns are exposed to the publishing process and our business through a hands-on internship, working directly with our editorial team. Accepted students will train and learn all operations of the publishing process, including but not limited to doing the following activities for actual upcoming books:

  • Review proposals;
  • Manage peer reviews;
  • Draft book copy;
  • Conduct market research;
  • Solicit and edit endorsements;
  • Research book cover images;
  • Regularly attend Editorial Board Meetings, Marketing Launches, Informational Lunch & Learns, as well as sit in on the occasional author meetings to learn more about the publishing process.

Because Rowman & Littlefield is committed to the growth of tomorrow’s publishing leaders, students selected as interns are expected to gain practical and valuable experience, not only in their hired department but with regard to the publishing industry as a whole. During their internship, accepted students will get experience with other departments, including marketing and production, in an effort to broaden their view of the publication process.

This internship offers a flexible schedule, but candidates must know their schedule (academic and otherwise) for the requisite semester when applying. Candidates should have a passionate interest in the publishing industry, with a specific passion for non-fiction is preferred. A general understanding of a specific target market is a plus, but not required.

Adding Rowman & Littlefield to your list of networks will help build your reputation with industry-respected training and experience!

Applications must be submitted by July 30th to be considered for the fall semester.
