Job Description
Definition: The Certified Nursing Assistant provides essential care and support to patients under the supervision of licensed nurses. CNAs assist residents/patients with activities of daily living, monitor vital signs, ensure comfort and safety, and promote overall well-being.
Distinguishing Characteristics: Certified Nursing Assistants are responsible for direct patient care and help to maintain the physical, emotional, and psychosocial well-being of residents and patients. They work closely with nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality health care and create a positive and nurturing environment for residents and patients.
Essential Functions: (Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned jobs/duties are not limited to the essential functions).
  1. Assists residents/patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), which may include bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.
  2. Aids residents/patients with mobility and transfers, including walking, using a wheelchair, and repositioning in bed.
  3. Supports resident’s/patient’s nutritional needs by feeding them, providing assistance with eating, and monitoring food intake.
  4. Aids residents/patients with medication reminders.
  5. Measures and records vital signs, including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, weight, and respiration rates, and documents and reports any abnormal results or significant changes to nursing staff.
  6. Maintains accurate and up-to-date records of resident/patient information.
  7. Collaborates with nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and comprehensive patient care.
  8. Follows proper infection control protocols, including hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintaining a clean and sanitary environment.
  9. Adheres to safety guidelines to prevent falls, accidents, and injuries to residents/patients and self.
  10. Recognizes and reports any potential hazards or safety concerns in the resident’s/patient’s environment.
  11. Completes echocardiograms (EKGs) as directed if properly trained and participates in regularly scheduled competency trainings.
  12. Participates in quality assurance and process improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and safety.
