DescriptionWe are looking for a talented Systems Engineering Leaderto join our team specializing in Power Systems Business Segment for our ENGINEERING in Columbus, Indiana.In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways: This product focused, developing leadership position performs established technical tasks at the product and cross-business integration level for current and future products within a given business unit or corporate area. This involves work across many steps in the product life cycle. Because of the product centered nature of this position, they are very often a central point of coordination and decision making between product engineers, product line engineers, customer teams, purchasing, suppliers and manufacturing.Obtains input from stakeholders such as technical managers, project leaders, other product and manufacturing engineers and supplier partners to deliver information and recommendations that lead to quality product decisions.Uses systems knowledge and expertise to make decisions in the areas of technology integration, design, analysis and experimental test verification and validation for both new a current product that impact product form, functionality and overall project risk trade-offs.Creates, manages, improves and applies processes such ESW, iDFMEA, FIRG and tools such as 7-step problem solving, design review checklist and other specialized tools required to support the processes and enable high quality decision making.Provides problem resolution leadership for complex systems with a high degree of ambiguity and often global business impact.Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across function(s) within a global business unit or managing improvement across business units.Coordinates and directs work of technical project teams, up to and including direct management of small to mid-sized teams.Operates as the recognized multi-competency specialist or expert in a discipline or product area across a site or global business unit with responsibility for developing local talent (direct or indirect). Coaches and mentors' other engineers, project managers and cross-functional team members.May also include academic or industry collaboration in a competency or discipline area.QualificationsTo be successful in this role you will need the following:Product Failure Mode Avoidance - Mitigates potential product failure modes, by identifying interfaces, functions, functional requirements, interactions, control factors, noise factors, and prioritized potential failure modes and potential failure causes for the system of interest to effectively and efficiently improve the reliability of Cummins’ products.Product Function Modeling, Simulation and Analysis - Impacts product design decisions through the utilization and/or interpretation of computational tools and methods that predict the capability of a product's function relative to its system, sub-system and/or component level requirements.Product Interface Management and Integration - Identifies and analyzes the interfaces and interactions across system boundaries by specifying the requirements and limits to ensure that the product meets requirements; controls the interactions across the system element boundaries by making sure that they remain within specified limits; integrates system elements by creating an integration plan, including identification of method and timing for each activity to make it easier to find, isolate, diagnose, and correct.Product Problem Solving - Solves product problems using a process that protects the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; and identifies the systemic root causes and recommended actions to prevent problem reoccurrence. Product Verification and Validation Management - Develops product systems validation plans from a variety of inputs to identify failure modes, while managing product risk and relative priority; negotiates product requirements against capability to guide project scope; evaluates analytical, simulation and physical test results to verify product capability and validate requirements; assesses legacy versus proposed system solution capabilities and produces recommendations with technical documentation to support product decisions.System Requirements Engineering - Uses appropriate methods and tools to translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements to which designs are developed; establishes acceptance criteria for the system of interest through analysis, allocation and negotiation; tracks the status of requirements throughout the system lifecycle; assesses the impact of changes to system requirements on project scope, schedule, and resources; creates and maintains information linkages to related artifacts.Systems Thinking - Defines the system of interest by drawing the boundaries, identifying its context within its environment, its interfaces, and that it has a lifecycle to aid in planning the problem statement, scope and deliverables ; analyzes linkages and interactions between elements that comprise the system of interest by using appropriate methods, models and integration of outcomes to understand the system, predict its behavior and devise modifications to it in order to produce the desired effects.Builds networks - Effectively building formal and informal relationship networks inside and outside the organization.Communicates effectively - Developing and delivering multi-mode communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences.Cultivates innovation - Creating new and better ways for the organization to be successful.Decision quality - Making good and timely decisions that keep the organization moving forward.Manages ambiguity - Operating effectively, even when things are not certain, or the way forward is not clear.Manages complexity - Making sense of complex, high quantity, and sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve problems.Optimizes work processes - Knowing the most effective and efficient processes to get things done, with a focus on continuous improvement.Education, Licenses, CertificationsCollege, university, or equivalent bachelor's degree in engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.ExperienceWe're looking for a candidate with demonstrated success in previous cross-functional roles leading system engineering as part of an engine or vehicle powertrain development technical core team, supporting in areas such as:  1) requirements management and verification, 2) engineering design and concept generation/selection, 3) mechanical and performance development, 4) failure mode identification and resolution, and 5) user level PTC Integrity/Windchill Tool documentation and support.Demonstrated success having worked in a Technical Specialist/Specialist Engineering role on lower complexity product development activities, translating customer needs and negotiating into product development plans, technical profiles and/or product specifications with a proven track record of successful product decisions.This role will be a key leadership position within the team, reporting directly to the platform Chief Engineer.  While no direct reports are required in this role, proactive guidance and real-time coaching and mentoring of your co-worker partners is required to achieve success.Prior experience with new product development is desired, especially in areas of non-road and industrial engine and powertrain systems, systems integration, exhaust emissions development, system level optimization and evaluation, engine and aftertreatment system controls and diagnostics, utilizing and interpreting analytical outputs to guide and support decision making, and supporting your team members in these critical areas.You will additionally support project system level connections between the new product development team and our partner organizations such as product compliance, worldwide component experts and subject matter experts, Cummins Components group engineers, and engine test cell and machine-level testing organizations.As a part of a highly motivated, high intensity work environment, this role requires someone who wants to 'jump right in'.  This role will be as much about determining, documenting, and development of system level requirements coordination as it will be about figuring out how to change course efficiently and effectively while maintaining project timelines and high-level deliverables.Compensation and BenefitsBase salary rate commensurate with experience, range: $120,000-$180,000. Please note that the salary range provided is a good faith estimate on the applicable range. The final salary offer will be determined after considering relevant factors, including a candidate’s qualifications and experience, where appropriate.
