  • Must be able to work independently and be proficient in all areas of the Laboratory. Must be proficient in Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Transfusion Services, Urinalysis, Phlebotomy, and Specimen Processing.
  • Verifies or records identity of patient and converses with patient to allay fear of procedure.
  • Performs routine venipunctures while observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood specimens.
  • Collects and labels specimens within one hour of request.
  • Using manual procedures and/or automated analyzer and conducts quantitative and qualitative chemical analysis of body fluids such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid to determine presence of normal and abnormal components.
  • Tests and records control specimens which are run with each test.
  • Studies blood cells, their numbers, and morphology.
  • Performs blood group type and compatibility tests for transfusion purposes.
  • Must be able to perform microbiology according to Hospital policy and procedure.
  • Analyses test results and questions abnormal and/or unexpected results to ascertain accuracy.
  • Promptly notifies nursing unit (within 5 minutes) of all panic value results.
  • Sends out specimens to reference laboratories.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure.
  • Verifies instrument functioning by checking and calibrating specific lab instruments and documents data.
  • Records on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed of equipment.
  • Maintains daily work counts and temperature charts.
  • Keeps track of supplies and notifies Director when supplies are low.
  • Clean work areas, stock supplies daily, maintain registration/charge/result files, and such other tasks that may be assigned by the Lead Laboratory Technologist.
  • Assures that all tasks performed are in compliance with related state and federal guidelines, rules and regulations.
  • Maintain monthly continuing education articles.
  • Abides by Yoakum Community Hospital policies and procedures as set forth in the Employee Handbook.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree (AA.) in MLT program from two-year college or technical school.
  • Certified Medical Laboratory Technician.
  • Must be registered with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent or eligible.
  • Six months to one-year related experience and/or training.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
