Position Description

Our Facilities Engineers experience variety on the job while working in a team environment. Our team is hands-on with building automation systems. Using your facility experience, become part of our exceptional, efficient, highly skilled Facilities team. The Anoka County Facilities Management and Construction Department is committed to providing the highest standard of excellence in keeping all county facilities safe, clean, comfortable, and with a well-maintained environment.

The Facilities Engineer III serves as an elevated point of contact for facilities maintenance, problem solving, and will evaluate the need for changes or recommendations regarding facility systems; serves as a knowledge resource and mentor for the facilities engineering team; performs work under minimal supervision.

The Facilities Engineer IV oversees the daily activities of a team responsible for repairing or maintaining a variety of equipment necessary for the operation of county facilities and serves as an expert knowledge resource and leader for the facilities engineering team; is the lead point of contact for facilities maintenance, problem solving, and will evaluate the need for changes or recommendations regarding facility systems.

Facilities Engineers have a new and different work environment every day and perform a variety of maintenance and repair tasks for the safety, comfort, security, and beautification of facilities County-wide. The Facilities Engineer positions are stable with constant work that is performed during a 40-hour workweek. The travel is limited to the boundaries of Anoka County, and you will be home for dinner.


This full-time, non-exempt, benefit-eligible position is located at a variety of Anoka County properties. This position requires a minimal on-call rotation. Typical working hours are 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 pm. Monday through Friday. Interviews will take place as applications are received. The anticipated start date for this position will be June, 2024.

Pay & Benefits

  • Facilities Engineer III Salary: $60,819.20 - $72,966.40 ($29.24 to $35.08 per hour).
  • 2024 Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 32: $60,819.20 - $85,113.60 ($29.24 to $40.92 per hour).
  • Facilities Engineer IV Salary: $70,012.80 to $84,011.20 ($33.66 to $40.39 per hour).
  • 2024 Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 34: $70,012.80 to $98,009.60 ($33.66 to $47.12 per hour).

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate, repair, and maintain stationary facilities equipment.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and perform preventative maintenance and determine methods for minimizing disturbance, inconvenience, and risk for county employees and customers.
  • Maintain, monitor, and adjust heating and air-conditioning systems and alarms.
  • Repair and replace faulty electrical equipment.
  • Maintain piping and drain systems, clean and snake drains, repair and replace plumbing fixtures, flush-o-meters, faucets, leaking pipes, and drains.
  • Ensure doors and door hardware are in good working order.
  • Perform complex troubleshooting and maintenance on air compressors, fans, pumps, and outdoor equipment.
  • Coordinate annual boiler inspections and cleanings and ensure safe operation and maintenance of flame detection devices, climate controls. Ensure proper records.
  • Direct and assist with the repair, moving, maintenance, and customization of office furnishings and equipment.
  • Respond to and maintain alarms related to facilities safety.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group.

  • Schedule, coordinate, and delegate preventative maintenance tasks while determining methods for minimizing disturbance, inconvenience, and risk for county employees and customers.
  • Determine maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of air-conditioning systems and alarms.
  • Repair and replace faulty electrical equipment.
  • Maintain piping and drain systems, clean and snake drains, repair and replace plumbing fixtures, flush-o-meters, faucets, leaking pipes, and drains.
  • Ensure doors and door hardware are in good working order.
  • Oversee and direct periodic maintenance on air compressors, fans, pumps, and outdoor equipment.
  • Coordinate annual boiler inspections and cleanings and ensure safe operation and maintenance of flame detection devices, climate controls. Ensure proper records.
  • Ensure the facilities team provides excellent repair, moving, maintenance, and customization of office furnishings and equipment.
  • Respond to and maintain alarms related to facilities safety.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group, and may act as a lead providing daily work direction and managing timeline of weekly activities.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

Facilities Engineer III:

  • Requires accreditation from a technical school or applicable trades and at least 4 years of job-related experience
  • In lieu of the required education, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis
  • Ability to operate HVAC equipment, and hand and power tools
  • Ability to commit to an after-hours on-call team rotation; 1-hour response time required
  • Successfully pass driver's license background check
  • Ability to use Computer Maintenance Management and Building Automation computer software
  • Knowledge of state and local building and safety codes and OSHA safety standards
  • Knowledge of principles of electricity, plumbing, HVAC theory, maintenance, and construction
  • Ability to prioritize and manage deadlines
  • Possess a Second-Class C Boiler's License with the ability to obtain a First Class C Boiler's license within 12 months of hire
  • CFC Universal Certification, or ability to obtain license within six months of hire

Facilities Engineer IV:

  • Requires accreditation from a technical school or applicable trades and at least 6 years of job-related experience
  • In lieu of the required education, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis
  • Ability to operate HVAC equipment, and hand and power tools
  • Ability to commit to an after-hours on-call team rotation; 1-hour response time required
  • Successfully pass driver's license background check
  • Ability to use Computer Maintenance Management and Building Automation computer software
  • Knowledge of state and local building and safety codes and OSHA safety standards
  • Knowledge of electrical applications, building automation systems, security systems, heating and air-conditioning equipment, electricity, plumbing, HVAC theory, maintenance, and construction

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

  • Standard office environment, and outdoor work sites in all weather conditions depending on assignment
