Overview

The Histology Associate III will be responsible for performing immunohistochemistry (IHC) tasks under the Pathology Support Contract and will work at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).

Responsibilities
    Perform chromogenic and fluorescent immunohistochemistry utilizing both manual and automated procedures
  • Develop IHC protocols
  • Perform cryosectioning, microtomy, and necropsy procedures, as needed
  • Maintain laboratory equipment
  • Document and maintain study records to comply with appropriate requirements
  • Proficient in hazardous waste management and solution preparation
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of relevant computer systems, specifically Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in biological science or a related discipline
  • Three years' experience in performing immunohistochemical procedures

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with automated stainers, including Leica BOND RX
  • Experience with RNAscope assays
  • Necropsy experience (must be willing to learn animal handling to include blood collection and euthanasia)

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior office or laboratory environment
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • The noise level is usually moderate
  • Requires moderate physical activity with frequent talking, standing, walking and repetitive movement of hands and fingers, reaching and lifting 10 -50 pounds.
  • Use of PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) when required (i.e., able to wear latex or nitrile gloves, dust mask or respirator, and safety glasses as required)
  • This position will frequently be involved with sharp, solvents, irritants, acids, bases, and other hazardous chemicals, flammable materials, and biohazards.
