The Grid & Growth group is responsible for supporting siting and interconnecting the AES Clean Energy portfolio to transmission systems across the United States.

The primary responsibilities of this role are: strategic analysis of the interconnection procedures and queue to steer greenfield project siting, and to then prepare and lead interconnection requests through to an Interconnection Agreement with the most favorable terms possible. The IIE supports the Manager (Southeast) on progressing assigned projects through the interconnection process and working multi-functionally with the broader Development Team and other internal teams to optimize the position throughout the development lifecycle.

The preferred candidate has experience in the preparation and review of interconnection requests; interconnection studies; PSCAD, CYME, ASPEN, PSS/E and/or PSLF models; and participating in the management of solar, through the generator interconnection processes including negotiation and execution of GI Agreements. Additional responsibilities include monitoring the progress of required system upgrades and identifying creative mitigation solutions when needed.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The Interconnection Engineer will support all interconnection activities through the full life cycle of development and construction of projects. The position will support the Manager and other team members leading to the successful execution of both new and acquired projects. Some travel required within the US.

Support greenfield development: review transmission system analysis, lead the identification of agencies and procedures, help lead preparation and filing interconnection requests including leading internal and external parties on preparation of technical materials, provide viability feedback to the team partners to support any financial and project approvals needed. Present and support new ideas and opportunities for new strategic endeavors.

Interconnection study process: lead and support the review and analysis of utility study report including scope of work, cost, and schedule; lead tracking and reporting of results throughout the study process; translating results for non-technical teams

Implementation of portfolio projects: lead assistance of internal groups to complete deliverables required by Interconnecting Utility to construct interconnection facilities including integrating schedules into project construction schedule.

Support and lead project due diligence efforts, identify existing and potential red flags for project acquisitions and existing pipeline projects.

Desired Skills and Expertise:

Familiarity with reviewing interconnection studies and power flow models. Experience running study models a plus.

Ability to analyze power flow and system impact studies for interconnection of distributed generation/community solar and utility scale solar, wind, and storage generating facilities.

Knowledge of SIS and other related studies and procedures for projects acquired through competitive bidding and/or M&A

Understanding of electrical diagrams, preliminary site plans, and preparation of interconnection request packages for submittal.

Awareness of distribution and transmission systems and how they operate in the US.

Knowledge of DG or Small Generator Interconnection Procedures across the US.

Knowledge of utility regulation, public utility investigative dockets, driven bid rules/tariffs for renewable energy acquisition, and performance requirements for power purchase agreements.

Leadership skills and the ability to work with a variety of individuals in a professional manner

Ability to remain flexible and adapt to changing priorities

Strong interpersonal skills and strong written, oral, and presentation skills including clear, comprehensive, and succinct communications for a wide variety of audiences

Understanding of Interconnection and Transmission Agreements and Contracts.

Minimum Qualifications:

BS or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering or related field.

3-5+ years work history in renewable or traditional energy development, utility generation development, or distribution/transmission planning. Previous employment or experience working as consultants providing services within those footprints is strongly preferred.

The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements such as annual bonus, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, vision, life, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered.
