Overview

The Histology Associate I will be responsible for performing histology tasks under the Pathology Support Contract and will work at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). Major daily tasks will include tissue trimming, processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and slide quality assurance assessment.

Responsibilities
    Proficient in the processing of tissue samples according to laboratory protocols
  • Proficient in the skill of embedding tissue into blocks
  • Proficient in microtomy and able to generate quality tissue sections
  • Accurately mount tissue specimens onto slides
  • Perform routine hematoxylin and eosin and special histochemical stains
  • Examine blocks and or slides to identify anatomical landmarks macroscopically or microscopically to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements
  • Change slide stainer and tissue processor solutions
  • Maintain laboratory equipment
  • Document and maintain study records to comply with appropriate requirements
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of relevant computer systems, specifically Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in laboratory science or a related discipline
  • Two years' experience in performing histological procedures

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Histology Technician HT or HTL(ASCP), ASCP board certified eligible
  • Necropsy experience (must be willing to learn animal handling to include blood collection and euthanasia)

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior office or laboratory environment
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • The noise level is usually moderate
  • Requires moderate physical activity with frequent talking, standing, walking and repetitive movement of hands and fingers, reaching and lifting 10 -50 pounds.
  • Use of PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) when required (i.e., able to wear latex or nitrile gloves, dust mask or respirator, and safety glasses as required)
  • This position will frequently be involved with sharp, solvents, irritants, acids, bases, and other hazardous chemicals, flammable materials, and biohazards.
