The Dean of Students is accountable for creating and preserving a school environment and atmosphere that is safe and orderly and exemplifies Destiny Christian Academy’s mission and vision; an environment and atmosphere where all students can grow academically and emotionally. The High School Dean of Students will report to the High School Principal and will work closely with the High School Assistant Principal and the Director of Security in the coordination of school security and student supervision before and after school, and articulate and implement all disciplinary policies in accordance with the DCA mission, vision, and the student handbook.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Culture

The High School Dean of Students is accountable for creating and preserving a school environment and culture that is safe and orderly and exemplifies DCA mission and vision; an environment and atmosphere where all students can grow spiritually, academically, and emotionally. Specifically, the Dean is responsible for the following:

  • Ensuring consistent implementation and enforcement of the student handbook focusing specifically on the school policies and procedures for attendance, conduct, discipline, and dress code.
  • Ensuring appropriate supervision of students at all school activities.
  • Proactively creating relationship building opportunities for students.
  • Crafting and executing intentional mentoring program for students.
  • Developing a united school culture for students in collaboration with high school administration.
  • Collaborating with high school administration and student leadership to plan and develop continuous teaching and review of the student handbook.
  • Provide supervision and development of campus monitor.
  • Partnering with the high school pastors and Bible teachers to capture spiritual formation opportunities.


Discipline

The High School Dean of Students articulates and implements all disciplinary policies in accordance with the DCA mission, vision, and the student handbook with a heart of spiritual formation. Specifically, the Dean is responsible for the following:

  • Ensuring the school has an effective behavior management system that reinforces positive behavior.
  • Coordinating resolution of student discipline problems in a fair and just manner with conflict resolution activities (restoration process).
  • Coordinating the implementation of disciplinary consequences: lunch detention, after school detention, and in-house suspension.
  • Assisting/arranging for drug, alcohol education programs and support.
  • Partnering with parents of students with behavioral issues.
  • Providing documentation and recommendations to principals regarding suspension and expulsion of students.
  • Assisting staff in developing, implementing, and monitoring prescribed interventions.
  • Creating appropriate student behavior/discipline history that includes accurate and detailed records of all student discipline and office referrals.
  • Providing and tracking data of student behavior and supporting RTI and SST programs.
  • Conferring with high school administration, staff, students, and parents concerning student behavior problems and discipline issues.
  • Responsible for assisting the High School Assistant Principal in addressing chronic attendance problems and/or truancy.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in a school environment.
  • Relentless focus on student achievement and school culture.
  • Teaching experience strongly preferred.
  • Leadership and/or counseling experience preferred.
  • Education: BA required, MA preferred.
  • Credential: State teaching credential strongly recommended.
  • Credential: ACSI teaching credential required if state credential is not valid. If a candidate hasn't completed either credential, he or she must be willing to complete ACSI credential during employment.
  • Ability to solve a wide range of intellectual and practical problems; nonverbal symbolism; comprehend most abstruse concepts.
  • Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through verbal communication.
  • Ability to compute arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Ability to report, write, or edit articles for publication, prepare and deliver lectures; interview, counsel, or advise people; evaluate technical data.
  • Ability to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to perform such activities as balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions.
  • Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less, 20 feet or more, and at distances of more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet.
  • Ability to perceive the nature of sounds with no less than a 40 db loss at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz and 2,000 Hz with or without correction.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position’s duties are normally performed in a standard work environment based on the activity scheduled. Some physical effort is required; therefore, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. He or she may be required to walk or sit for extended periods and may be exposed to outside weather conditions, including but not limited to heat, cold, humidity, rain, and direct sunlight. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment, such as a computer keyboard, mouse, calculator, and other similar machines.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

Working conditions are dynamic. This requires the willingness to work a flexible schedule that may require occasional weekend and/or evening hours. The employee will be using his or her personal vehicle; therefore, he or she must hold a valid driver’s license in the state where he or she is based and have appropriate auto insurance as required by law. The employee needs to be able to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize work assignments, and do well under pressure. He or she must also demonstrate professionalism and integrity, take initiative, and exercise confidentiality. Finally, the employee must understand and apply all school policies and procedures, follow instructions, be detailed oriented, and have good follow-through on all projects.
