Job Title: Director of Accounting/Controller                                            Department:  Finance

Location: Germantown, Maryland                                                              Full time, Exempt

Reports to: CFO                                                                                              Supervises: Sr. Accountant and A/P


Foundation Overview:

The HealthWell Foundation is a Forbes 100-rated, Maryland-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to underinsured Americans to help them afford life-changing medical treatments.  Our mission is to reduce financial barriers to care for underinsured patients living with chronic or life-altering diseases. 


Job Purpose:

The purpose of this position is to positively contribute to HealthWell’s efforts to carry out its mission.  Specifically, persons in this position carry out the implementation and day-to-day management of the operations of the accounting department and provides technical support to the CFO in the areas of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and all applicable laws and regulations.

Persons in this position are expected to be in-office at least three days per week (hybrid) in accordance with the Foundation’s telecommuting policy.


Position Overview:

  • Manage the daily accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, reviewing journal entries, account reconciliations, etc.
  • Establish monthly close process and ensure completion
  • Manage grants accounting processes, including tracking grant funds, ensuring compliance with grant requirements
  • Prepare monthly and annual reports for HealthWell related to financial reports in a timely manner for the CFO
  • Assists the CFO with annual financial audit, 990 filing, and the financial aspects of all other program audits
  • Responsible for implementing and managing through the established internal control processes, procedures, and policies by the CFO
  • Works with Operations staff to manage and release incoming donations and ensure appropriate fees are held for program funds
  • Maintain state registration files, as well as maintain state compliance through payments and other requests
  • Monitor and analyze balance sheets, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
  • Other duties as needed or required

  • Strong accounting, bookkeeping, organizational, and data management skills
  • Good communication skills, internal/external customer service, attention to detail, and maintenance of confidentiality
  • Ability to process diverse information and manage multiple accounts
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting; excellent productivity and time management skills
  • Ability to provide assistance and supervision
  • Ability to learn new software and technology, and make process recommendations
  • Ability to manage individuals that are direct reports, including establishing goals and training when necessary


Qualifications & Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an accounting related field and 8+ years’ experience in accounting
  • 4 to 5 years of supervisory experience
  • Experience with Multiview ERP system preferred but not required
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize, and manage tasks to meet deadlines and expectations with minimal supervision
  • Extensive knowledge of accounting principles with focus on Not-for-Profit accounting application
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in written and verbal communication skills.
  • CPA preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite products, specifically proficient in Excel
