Water & Sewer Equipment Operator II - CDL                                                                                 

Water & Sewer


JOB SUMMARY


This position is responsible for performing a variety of specialized functions in infrastructure maintenance and repairs.

 

As a municipal organization, the City of St. Marys is an emergency provider of services. Some emergency situations, including weather related emergencies, may necessitate City of St. Marys employees to assist in areas of work which may not be directly related to the employees specific job function, but which will be within the physical capabilities, training, and skills of the employee.

 

 

MAJOR DUTIES


  1. Mows and weeds City grounds.
  2. Removes tree limbs using sidearm cutter; cuts trees and limbs using chainsaw.
  3. Drives flatbed dump truck and small dump truck for hauling materials to and from job sites.
  4. Drives bucket trucks and heavy equipment such as bulldozers and loaders.
  5. Runs loader to load and unload truck, to backfill, and to remove dirt from job site.
  6. Serves as traffic control flagger to keep traffic flowing and places road work signs for safety; serves as pole man for surveying.
  7. Operates backhoe for pot hole repairs, repairs pot holes by filling with asphalt, and assists with manhole repairs.
  8. Installs and repairs sewer lines, lift stations water taps, meters, BFPs, force main, gravity flow lines and services; repairs water lines, water main lines and services, and fire hydrants; locates water and sewer lines prior to performing repairs to avoid damage.
  9. Repairs concrete driveways, sidewalks, and storm drains.
  10. Pours forms, places forms, and finishes cement.
  11. Sets up and operates laser transit for ditches, manholes, and pipes to ensure proper grade.
  12. Rakes ditches and grades.
  13. Levels out roads and ditches with motor grader; lays brick or block for drain boxes, valve boxes, or drying beds.
  14. Operates, inspects and maintains equipment; fuels trucks and equipment; washes trucks and equipment.
  15. Installs decorative lights for special events; sets up for special events.
  16. Performs all other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION


  1. Knowledge of heavy equipment operation.
  2. Knowledge of carpentry.
  3. Knowledge of plumbing and distribution systems, plant operation and meter operation.
  4. Knowledge of masonry.
  5. Knowledge of welding/cutting equipment.
  6. Knowledge of safety rules.
  7. Knowledge of computers and job related software.
  8. Skill in oral and written communication.
  9. Skill in operating various types of equipment.
  10. Skill in problem solving.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS


The Water and Sewer Field Maintenance Crew Leader assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

 

GUIDELINES


Guidelines include OSHA safety guidelines, EPD guidelines, vac-con guidelines, driver safety, safety truck operations, and OSHA guidelines. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK


  • The work consists of variety of heavy equipment operation and maintenance duties.
  • The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of specialized maintenance and repair functions. Success in this position contributes to efficient and effective operations of this department.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT


  • The work is typically performed typically while sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally lifts heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and utilizes sense of smell.
  • The work is performed in a noisy place or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, and grease, machinery with moving parts, and contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.

 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY


None.  


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


  • High school diploma or equivalent required; and
  • More than two years of related experience required; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
  • Possession of a valid state driver’s license issued for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Class A CDL.
