ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Goleta invites applications for the position of Library Page at Goleta Valley Library. The role of Library Page is integral to the success of everyday operations at the library. During a typical shift Pages complete routine tasks such as shelving materials and retrieving book drops. Throughout the year they also complete projects such as shifting collections, shelf reading, and assisting with program set-up. The ideal candidate will work well both independently and as part of a team, and will display thoroughness and keen attention to detail in the completion of their duties. Anticipated schedule:

Mondays - 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Tuesdays - 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Wednesdays - 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Thursdays - 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Fridays - 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Goleta Valley Library is a division of the Neighborhood Services Department. The Library provides a wide slate of programs for all ages, a variety of materials in all formats for borrowing by its users, and day-to-day customer service to its patrons. General areas of focus include: Administration, Collection Management and Cataloging, Circulation, Reference, Digital Services, Adult Programs, and Youth Programs. In addition to the Goleta Valley Library, the City of Goleta also manages the Buellton and Solvang Libraries.

DEFINITION
Under direct supervision, performs a variety of manual tasks in support of library services.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Library Page is the entry-level class in the library support series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents perform a variety of routine manual support tasks. The Library Page helps to provide public access to library materials by ensuring that all library materials are readily available in an organized and accurate order.

This class is distinguished from Library Assistant I in that the latter independently performs related entry-level clerical and circulation duties in support of library services.

This is a non-benefited, non-career at-will classification. Persons appointed to positions in this classification will be classified as temporary, at-will employees, and will not gain property rights. Incumbents will work no more than 15 hours per week.

Examples of Duties

The following duties are typical for positions in this classification. Incumbents may not perform all listed job functions, nor are all listed duties necessarily performed by everyone in this class depending upon business need and changing business practices:


  1. Performs a variety of routine manual library support tasks including sorting, shelving, stacking, and retrieving a wide variety of library materials;
  2. Maintains Library materials according to alphabetical, numerical and categorical systems;
  3. Conducts shelf reading for accuracy and shifts and transports books and other library materials to assigned areas of the library as directed;
  4. Assists in keeping all areas of the library in a clean, neat, and orderly condition and public office supplies stocked;
  5. Packs, unpacks and distributes library shipments;
  6. Assists in program and display set-up;
  7. Operates standard office equipment; and
  8. Performs related work as assigned.
Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience:
  • Six months of general clerical experience is desirable.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Note: The level and scope of the abilities listed below are related to job duties as defined under Class Characteristics.

Ability to:

  • Understand and carry out oral verbal and written instructions;
  • Sort and organize materials in alphabetical, numerical and topical order and attend to detail to ensure accuracy;
  • Deal tactfully and effectively with a wide variety of library users and co-workers;
  • Operate standard office equipment and computer workstations; and
  • Perform routine physical tasks such as bending, stooping and reaching.

Applicants under 18 years of age will be required to secure a work permit prior to employment.
