Shop Mechanic

Alsum Farms, Inc, a sister company to Alsum Farms & Produce, Inc., is looking for a full-time Shop Mechanic in Arena, WI! Alsum Farms & Produce, Inc. is a grower, packer, and shipper of potatoes & onions located in Friesland, WI. As a Shop Mechanic, you will be responsible for the maintenance of farm equipment, buildings, and storage facilities.

A Day in the Life of an Alsum Farms Shop Mechanic:

In the role of a Shop Mechanic, your typical day involves overseeing all shop activities, prioritizing work orders for farm equipment maintenance, and meticulously managing an annual maintenance schedule. Collaboration with the farm manager is paramount as you coordinate the ordering of parts for farm trucks and equipment. Maintaining accurate inventory records and inputting work orders into the software program ensures the seamless operation of our equipment. Providing guidance and training sessions to both full-time and seasonal farm staff on equipment maintenance and operation, particularly during harvest, contributes to a culture of efficiency and safety. Additionally, you oversee the maintenance of farm buildings and grounds, focusing on enhancing efficiency and protection of crops, buildings, and equipment. Vigilance is crucial as you promptly address breakdowns in the potato truck fleet and other equipment, ensuring a continuous flow of potatoes from fields to storage bins.

Job Details

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $25.00-$30.00 per hour depending on experience

Work Location: Alsum Farms - Arena, WI

Job Schedule: Your expected hours will vary depending on season, but you can expect the following approximate schedule:

• Winter Season (November-March) = 36-40 weekly hours
• Seed Cutting Season (March-April) = 50 weekly hours
• Planting Season (April-Mid-May) = 60-70 weekly hours
• Growing Season (Mid-May-August) = 40-55 weekly hours (4-5 weekends on call for irrigation break downs)
• Harvest Season (September-October) = 60-80 weekly hours

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Extensive mechanical experience, with preference given to those with farm equipment knowledge
• Strong knowledge of diesel engines and hydraulic systems
• Experience with conveyors (preferred)
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite for inventory and work order records
• Self-motivated with the ability to function as part of a team
• Familiarity with Human Resource Information System (HRIS) software
• Valid state motor vehicle license with an acceptable motor vehicle record
  

Physical/Environmental Demands:

• Various repetitive movements; good manual dexterity
• Exposure to airborne particles or fumes
• Ability to lift 100 pounds at times
• Required safety gear: safety glasses and hearing protection
• Physically able to conduct inspections and carry equipment
• Navigation of various terrains at farming locations an within organizational premises
