Basic Function

This position participates in a variety of complex analytical laboratory support activities for a specific testing or research program. Work is performed through the application of a body of knowledge related to standard laboratory methods, practices, procedures, policies, regulations, and laboratory materials and equipment.

 

 Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs relatively complex laboratory analyses. Uses sophisticated and advanced equipment and instrumentation where necessary.
  • Performs complex sampling tasks which may require several steps and extra safety precautions and may need on-site analytical work to be performed.
  • Directs basic work such as simple analytical and sampling tasks as required by his supervisor.
  • Observes safety rules, reports hazards to his supervisor and acts on them as necessary.
  • Perform general laboratory maintenance to ensure that the laboratory is in full compliance with all safety, environmental and health regulations and procedures.
  • Operates, adjusts, and maintains scientific instruments, including, but not limited to pH meters, spectrophotometers, electrophoresis apparatuses, chromatography apparatuses, flame photometers, fluorescent immunoassay refractometers, particle counters, microprocessors, analytical balances, autoclaves, and compression testing equipment.
  • Coordinates the work of other Laboratory Technicians by scheduling assignments.  Assures the work quantity and quality by requiring strict adherence to methods and procedures.
  • Conducts research experiments in accordance with laboratory and safety protocols. Collects field and/or laboratory measurements and data. Computes results for a variety of research procedures, tests and techniques.
  • Maintains accurate records of procedures used to conduct experiments. Uses laboratory/computer equipment to conduct analyses of experiment data. Provides routine interpretations of analyses.
  • Handles and disposes of hazardous and non-hazardous materials in accordance with safety protocols.
  • Maintains and organizes laboratory supplies. Monitors inventory levels and orders or secures supplies as needed.
  • Conducts library research to assist in the planning and design of experiments.
  • Demonstrates task performance in the training of junior staff as directed by his supervisor.
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as directed by the supervisor.

 

Education and Experience

  • Minimum Two (2) years college or an associate degree in related-science major (such as, Chemistry, Geology or GeoChemistry) is required. Bachelor’s degree in related science disciple is preferred.   
  • Seven (7) years industrial laboratory work experience. Complete familiarity with standard lab practices.
  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined.  Must have ability to make professionally effective presentations, both oral and written. 
  • Knowledge of laboratory tests and analyses.  Knowledge of laboratory terminology and equipment. Knowledge of methods of preparing stains, solutions, and media.  Knowledge of Quality Assurance Procedures. Ability to handle samples and laboratory equipment. Ability to make mathematical computations.

 Must possess good work habits, a strong work ethic, and be able to adhere to company work hours, policies, and standard business etiquette.
