GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Medical Education Psychiatrist (Faculty) will report directly to the Section Chief/Faculty Physician. This person is responsible for the acute behavioral health team. This position includes provision of psychiatric care in the Emergency Department, Consult Services, and Inpatient Unit. The prescriber will deliver a comprehensive, collaborative approach to care and teach psychiatry residents and medical students. 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Serve as a core faculty member for the Broadlawns-UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency Program with duties including direct clinical supervision of psychiatry residents as well as didactic teaching and shared responsibility for the acute care curriculum of the residency program. 
  2. Inpatient consultation to non-psychiatry units
  3. ED consultation.
  4. Call-coverage to include intermittent overnights and weekends.
  5. Management of inpatients on the inpatient psychiatry service
  6. Evaluate, interpret, and coordinate information to make decisions and recommendations regarding patient disposition and care.
  7. Work as an integral member of the team to deliver coordinated improvement of health for the people served by Broadlawns Medical Center including refugees, and individuals with both public and private insurance.
  8. Round and manage admitted patients to identify and/or treat psychiatric conditions, both acute and chronic disease states.
  9. Evaluate, interpret, and coordinate information to make clinical decisions and recommendations regarding patient care.
  10. Utilize the interdisciplinary team model to stabilize patients' health.
  11. Assist patients forward on the continuum of wellness toward discharge.
  12. Participate in a teaching environment with medical students and Psychiatric Residents.         
  13. Support and embrace Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  1. Ability to work independently and as part of a care team.
  2. Passion for delivering medical care on behalf of patients with mental health or chemical dependency conditions.
  3. Ability to reprioritize tasks secondary to a rapidly changing work environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Board certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.  If not board certified, eligible to be board certified with a requirement of becoming board certified within two years of the date of hire. 
  2. Licensed to practice medicine in the state of Iowa.
  3. Eligible to work in the United States.
