About this job

Provides direct patient care to patients using the nursing process in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice.

Performs plan of care intervention, including medication administration, specimen collection, clinical treatments, as well as other medical care treatment.

Documents patient care given.

Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate to care team, physician, patient, and family.

Assists patients with performing activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.

Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.

Evaluates learning needs of patient and/or family and provides patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.

Works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.

Follows established policies and procedures, objectives, safety standards, and sensitivity to confidential information.

Willing and able to demonstrate appropriate core competencies annually or as requested.

Completes a comprehensive assessment according to hospital policy as related to management of emergencies in the Emergency Department.

Patient Triage.

Formulates a nursing diagnosis from assessment of patients' acute and chronic health problems.

Performs emergency procedures according to policy/procedure.

Assesses patient and patient representative's current learning needs and implements appropriate measures to meet knowledge deficits.

Demonstrates knowledge based on areas of, but not limited to, standards of care, practice and professional performance, policies and procedures, medications, lab values and legal issues.

Serves on hospital committees and/or participates in Q1 activities as directed by the Department Manger.

Assists with orientation of new employees and staff development activities for the unit.

Abides by Nursing Service Behavior Standards.

Performs additional job-related duties and functions as required.

Maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

Support the culture of service excellence throughout the organization.

Actively seek ways to demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and participate in professional development opportunities.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Completes annual educational requirements.

Tasks to be performed when staff RN is assigned to Charge function on a given shift: Individual assigned to charge is responsible to assess, plan, direct and evaluate the delivery of care to all patients in the following areas: Demonstrates ability to work independently. Assesses the efficiency and effectiveness of care provided on assigned shift and identifies problems with recommendations for improvement. Directs/supervises others in the planning of patient care. Notifies appropriate personnel of admissions to patient care unit from Emergency Department. Effectively directs staff during any emergency situations.


Minimum Education Graduate of a school of nursing. Current license to practice as an RN in the State of Michigan. Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Required Skills Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Certifications: X Basic Life Support (BLS) X Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Preferred: X Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) X Trauma Nursing Course Certified (TNCC) License: Registered Nurse Primary Source Verification: Michigan Board of Nursing.

Minimum Work Experience Preferred: One year nursing experience.
