Academic Leader in Residence

The Opportunity: The Academic Leader in Residence position prepares new and experienced school leaders to launch and lead Phalen Leadership Academies (PLA) nationwide. The position is designed to prepare highly qualified candidates who are knowledgeable, trained, equipped, and ready to implement the PLA model and lead PLA’s schools to success. 

The Academic Leader in Residence is responsible for ensuring the implementation of PLA’s academic programming, executing the PLA Academic Model, and providing day-to-day coaching and support to PLA’s teachers to help them and our scholars achieve academic success. In addition to serving as school leadership team members, you will engage in seminars, workshops, practicums, task completion, coaching, and mentorship so they can be assured of hitting goals as a school leader when they take on their own PLA school.

The Details: 

Key Deliverables:

  • Ensuring the school increases by a minimum of 10% in proficiency per year in both ELA and math on the state accountability test
  • Retain 90% of highly effective and effective teachers 
  • Ensures the execution of the PLA Academic Model is taking place in the school and holds the building leadership and staff accountable for the execution of the model
  • Responsible for ensuring that 100% of professional development provided at the school level is driven by the PLA Coaching Cycle analytics and identified overall need for the campus
  • Develops positive and supportive relationships with classroom teachers, administrators, and staff across partner schools
  • Responsible for leading and/or participating in partner meetings for assigned schools, including board and community meetings
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned
 

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • A passion for working with students and families in under-served communities
  • Master’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university
  • Valid State Principal/ Administrator License
  • High proficiency in grade-level standards, benchmarks, and curriculum
  • Experience tracking and using data to drive instruction
  • Demonstrates organizational and time management skills

 PLA is a transformative education nonprofit changing communities across the country by providing a depth of resources not found in the traditional education model.  In addition to serving as one of the country’s best turnaround school operators and successfully launching charter school start-ups, PLA also provides our school communities with a successful, research-based summer learning program (Summer Advantage), a successful Reading and Math Intervention program (Reading and Math Advantage), and a workforce development program (PLA University) that provides expanded opportunities for our high school graduates, along with the family members of our current staff and students. This menu of programs and services is unique to our network, sets us apart from other organizations, and provides expanded opportunities for our staff through career advancement opportunities, and expanded income opportunities.  

The Campus:

Hope Community PCS - Tolson is a public charter school in Washington, D.C. that was founded in 2006 and recently joined the PLA network in 2022. We serve about 250 scholars from PK - 8th grade with a school population that is reflective of the strength and diversity of the community in which we are privileged to serve. We pride ourselves on our STEAM-focused learning that results in scholars taking risks, engaging in learning, and having ownership of their education. Our vision is centered on having a growth mindset to encourage our scholars to develop their immense potential and continue to be active contributors to their communities. Compensation and benefits:

PLA School Leaders receive a base salary that is competitively aligned to the market. In addition to a base salary, PLA School Leaders receive:
