Development Summer Internship Program

About Us

USTA Mid-Atlantic, one of 17 sections of the United States Tennis Association, is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that serves members in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, and eastern and southern West Virginia. USTA Mid-Atlantic Foundation is committed to offering quality recreational and competitive programs for people of all ages and abilities. We aim to grow tennis in the Mid-Atlantic by creating accessible and inclusive opportunities that enrich ALL lives –physically, emotionally, and socially – by connecting all generations with the lifetime sport of tennis.  Our vision is tennis for EVERY community. 

Overview

The Summer Internship Program at USTA/Mid-Atlantic, provides unique exposure, support, and training opportunities to anyone interested in pursuing a career in Philanthropy, Nonprofit Management, Fundraising, or other related fields. Interns will walk away from this program with hands-on experience and valuable knowledge and will be presented with multiple occasions to showcase their talents as well as hone their existing skill set. Our interns are hard workers with creative minds and have a passion for developing and promoting the growth of tennis.

 Responsibilities may include:

  • Assist the Development team with managing and executing fundraising and cultivation events
  • Secure donations for auction items for fundraising events, including the Tennis Creates Gala
  • Assist the Development team by attending and helping implement USTA Mid-Atlantic events and fundraisers.
  • Conduct research and identify key contacts at corporations and foundations to support the work of the Foundation
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Current enrollment in a college or university studying Philanthropy, Nonprofit Management, Public Relations(or closely related degree program).
  • Ability to effectively communicate internally with staff and externally with customers when working events.
  • A teammate and collaborator who can work independently as well as in a group
  • Competency with Google Suite to include Gmail, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Drive
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have strong research skills
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and handle tasks responsibly
  • Must be flexible and adaptable to daily changing tasks and assignments
  • Must have access to Wi-Fi during work hours when working from home
  • Must have reliable transportation to attend events.
  • Physical Requirements of the Job: Spend frequent time making repetitive motions; spend frequent time sitting, standing and walking; spend frequent time using your hands to handle, reach, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls. Lifting up to 40lbs with or without assistance.

Internship Program FAQs

●   Who can apply? Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a college or university may apply. USTA Mid-Atlantic will work with interns if seeking college credit. Must be located in the Mid-Atlantic Region of VA, MD, DC, & WV.

●   What is the duration and time commitment of this internship program? The internship program runs from Monday, June 3, 2024 through Friday, August 11, 2024. Start and end dates are subject to change. Interns are expected to work 20-30 hours per week.

This is a hybrid internship and interns are required to work in-person events and may be required to come to the office located in Herndon, VA.  All candidates must be based in the Mid-Atlantic Region and be able to come into the Herndon, VA office at least 1-2 days per week or as required by their supervisor.

●       Is this a paid internship? Position is non-exempt and interns will be paid $17.00 an hour. Interns will be paid bi-weekly on Fridays based on the regular USTA/Mid-Atlantic pay schedule. Interns are expected to work 20-30 hours per week and will be given a schedule by their supervisor based on the work assigned each week.

●   How many weekend events are interns required to work?  Assisting at in-person events gives interns unique exposure to our programs. Interns may be required to work at minimum 2 weekend events (multi-day) during the internship program. Event dates and locations are subject to change.

●   Who will interns be working with? Interns will report to a departmental employee and work closely with other departments on various assignments, projects, and events.

●       What does the hiring process consist of?
