1. Communication: One of the most important skills restaurant managers need to master to be successful is their communication. Not only their communication with their team members, but communication with the guests of the restaurant. As a HIS Restaurant Manager Intern, you will be taught how to communicate effectively with team members, such as informing them of daily specials, handling issues between two or more team members and/or conflict between team members and guests. Interns will also be giving the opportunity to communicate with guests by being taught how to greet tables in a genuine and polite manner, greeting guests as they enter the restaurant, and also handling guest complaints.

  • Kitchen Communication: Interns will also learn how to effectively learn how to communicate with the kitchen. The kitchen is the heart of the house. Proper communication is a necessity in ensuring a smooth and successful shift. Learning who to speak to in the kitchen and when is it appropriate to speak to the kitchen staff is essential.
  • Non-verbal Communication: Not all communication is verbal. The way you dress, body language, and even the way you hold your hands says a lot. Intern managers will be given instructions on how to be aware of their nonverbal communication and control bad habits that can communicate the wrong message to guests and staff.

Communication is key, and understanding how to communicate properly will not only help you in managing a restaurant, but will also help you become a better manager.

2. Problem Solving: Restaurants are an ever evolving and changing organism. Each day brings about something new and interesting to experience. Manager Interns will learn how to think fast on their feet, solve problems, and come up with viable solutions. Examples of this could be:

  • Team members calling in sick
  • Cancelation of reservation
  • Navigate/plan large parties

Problem solving requires quick and decisive decision making that will be mastered all throughout the course
of the summer internship.

3. Managing: As an Intern Manager, YOU ARE A MANAGER. You will be responsible for handling cash at the end of the night. This will require you to be responsible for counting all the tills and server cash outs, properly locking up the safe and manager's office. You will be responsible closing the restaurant at night which consists of checking out servers/bartenders/hostesses/bussers. As an Intern Manager, you will be given every opportunity to learn about the Hospitality industry and what is required to be a manager, and hopefully grow as a manager.

4. Accountability: Again, as an Intern Manager, YOU ARE A MANAGER. That means you will be taught how to manage people. Managing people requires holding people accountable. The restaurant industry attracts people from all walks of life. Accountability is an important skill to that you will learn because not only does it protect the integrity of the restaurant, but also protects the team members and guests that are in the restaurant.

5. Leadership: Throughout this internship you will discover your personal leadership style and identify opportunities for developing your leadership skills. You will be giving the opportunity to motivate and lead a team through pit stops, staff meeting and everyday tasks. Leadership is an important part of this internship because it will help you identify and build techniques to help better manage your team.

6. Have Fun: Lastly have fun! Work does not have to be boring or unpleasant. The Hospitality industry is an exciting and is a fast-paced work environment. Having fun is the whole point of working in this industry. Managers set the tone of the work environment. If a manager is upbeat and positive, then most likely their team members will be upbeat and positive, which will then be perceived by the guests which will help make their experience in the restaurant more enjoyable.
