What Does an Assistant Store Manager Do?

  • Partners with store manager in the operation of the store including opening, closing, shift changes, task delegation, and scheduling of staff members
  • Greets customers, offers assistance with products/services, resolve customer complaints
  • Collaborates on inventory management and merchandising strategies to optimize store presentation and product availability
  • Executes sales plans with guidance from the Store Manager and contributes to achieving sales targets
  • Assists with interior and exterior store maintenance and ensures the upkeep of any applicable vehicles
  • Participates in staff training, monitors daily performance, and provides guidance and redirection as necessary
  • Participates in employee disciplinary discussions and performance reviews with the store manager who will manage and administer all employee coaching and counseling sessions
  • Partners with HR on employee concerns and investigations
  • Supervises register count, change orders, and bank deposits
  • Oversees employees’ daily performance and provides redirection and training, as needed
  • Collaborates with store to implement best practices, system conversions, store resets or renovations, and vendor programs
  • Responds to customer inquiries regarding product selection, placement of orders, requests for prices and quotes, complaints, scheduling of deliveries, and customer follow-ups
  • Initiates telephone calls to customers to generate sales
  • Obtains information on pricing specifications, uses and availability
  • Inputs customers’ orders, pricing information and additional data into the computer system
  • Researches credits and returns
  • Manages exterior and interior maintenance ensuring clean, neat, hazard-free, orderly store condition and appearance, including requesting store or system repairs
  • Ensures compliance with all safety policies and procedures
  • Additional duties, as assigned

What Does It Take to Be Successful as an Assistant Store Manager?

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years retail experience, prior supervisory experience a plus
  • Knowledge of hardware products, tools, and building materials
  • Proficiency in using point-of-sale (POS) systems and basic computer applications
  • Knowledge of store inventory control and merchandising preferred
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to build rapport with customers
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Physical ability to perform tasks that may require prolonged standing, sitting, and other activities necessary to perform job duties
  • Minimally must be able to lift 25 pounds without assistance; may lift over 25 pounds with or without assistance
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and responsible work practices
  • Results-oriented with the ability to serve stores with humility and be a steward of Nation’s Best’s values
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment while remaining adaptable and flexible
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a willingness to consistently provide superior customer service skills
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends - this role will be expected to have the flexibility to open/close store as needed
