LOCATION: RIVERSIDE COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM - DESERT REGION LITERACY OFFICE - MECCA

HOURS PER WEEK: 40

The Literacy Associate 3 position will be responsible for aspects of the literacy program, primarily grant execution, outreach, program coordination, and visiting and presenting at libraries. They would also work closely with Adult and Family Literacy volunteer tutors and learners.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.

  • Works closely with the RCLS Literacy Department, library staff, community partners and volunteers to plan, implement, facilitate, and promote literacy activities, programs, and projects
  • Coordinates Adult Basic Education and ESL, which includes managing/assisting current tutors, training new tutors, and actively searching to recruit tutors
  • Conducts outreach and represents the RCLS and Literacy Department at community events
  • Reports to and assists Literacy Services Coordinator
  • Seeks out and maintains relationships with community partners
  • Assists supervisor with additional tasks, as needed
  • Planning & sustaining programs
  • Assists in overseeing Literacy Services’ social media platforms and increasing department visibility
  • Maintains databases for reporting purposes
  • Know and understand the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement, and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library. In addition to these freedoms, support client discretion of materials available at your local library(ies).
  • Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Two years of library experience preferred
  • Two years of literacy experience is desirable
  • Must have a valid Class C driver's license
  • Proficiency with library systems and databases preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Familiarity with varied pedagogical practices related to literacy
  • Multilingual
  • High degree of proficiency in MS Office suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint desired
  • Experience in program planning
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Exhibits sensitivity to a wide range of cultures

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to frequently move from place to place within the location; file and retrieve books and other items on high shelves; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. of heavy boxes, books, and equipment; work in confined spaces; walk; bend; stoop; reach; and climb.
