DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Automotive Mechanic Trade Instructor for the Department of Corrections, you will maintain an inmate work crew for the purpose of providing vocational education and training the inmates in the field of automotive mechanics, both on the job and in the classroom. You will be responsible for instructing inmates on the proper methods of repair and maintenance of motorized vehicles and small engines, as well as rebuilding and replacing components of equipment such as cars, trucks, and farm equipment. Responsibilities also include maintaining order and discipline of inmates during work assignments as well as documenting worker attendance, orientation, safety training, performance evaluations, and payroll records.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40-hour work week.
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $48,425 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Four years of experience in the diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and replacement of various components and systems used in automobiles, trucks, or construction or heavy equipment; or
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the automotive mechanic trade; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the automotive mechanic trade.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires an active Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning Technician Certificate issued by an approved provider.
  • This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.

Other Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
