Job Announcement

This position serves as collection agency liaison to ensure the timely and accurate exchange of information concerning referred delinquent accounts. Maintains comprehensive knowledge of the statutory requirements and internal policies and procedures concerning the assessment and collection of all tax types. Researches and resolves difficult disputes related to assessments, billing and payment issues, waivers, collection activity, and other matters. Coordinates the timely release of legal actions, DMV holds, and recalled accounts. Acts as mediator between taxpayers and the collection agency. Reviews remittance files, reconciles commission and non-sufficient funds (NSF) reports, and prepares invoices. Accurately maintains the collection agency referral and remittance tracking database. Provides critical support in other sections throughout the agency. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with both internal and external contacts. Works with various levels of management and other personnel in performing other assigned duties.

Note: The assigned functional areas for this position include general administration, customer service, tax administration, and/or debt collection.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation and three years of experience providing administrative support in the assigned functional area(s).

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer. The working hours of this position may vary depending on the time of year to accommodate the general public. Must be willing and able to work varying schedules.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 2 years or more experience reconciling accounts
  • At least 2 years or more experience working with state and local laws regarding the assessment and collection of real estate, tangible property, and business license taxes.
  • Intermediate or higher knowledge of the Virginia law principles and procedures for collecting delinquent taxes and fees.
  • At least 3 years of excellent customer service skills and experience.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team, manage time, multi-task, and prioritize.
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion, initiative, and creativity.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to lift up to 10 lbs. Job is generally sedentary in nature; however, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, or bending. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
