Salary Range: $55,000- 65,000

Our School

Houston Classical Charter School (“Houston Classical”) was chartered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to open in Houston in August 2020 beginning with kindergarten and first grade. Houston Classical will eventually grow to serve Pre K-8th. The school has an accomplished and committed Board, which includes a founding Board and a Head of School. DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

Under the supervision of the Director of Special Education and the general direction of the School Principal, the School Counselor/Social Worker  is responsible for providing a full range of school counseling and social-emotional services to students and families of all grade levels. 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of the District School Social Worker, the Intern performs the following duties:

  • Assist in assessing home, school, personal, and community factors that may affect a student’s learning and overall well-being, and make recommendations and referrals as needed.
  • Provide confidential, evidence-based individual and/or group counseling and early intervention services for students having difficulties with academic progress, including but not limited to mental health, trauma awareness, social skills, grief, emotion regulation, conflict resolution, peer mediation, motivation, and other social emotional issues that impact learning.
  • Assist with crisis intervention and the assessment of students experiencing suicidal or homicidal ideation and self-harm under the supervision of licensed social worker.
  • Provide case management of students on caseload.
  • Conduct observations of students, identify and provide interventions that will assist in creating positive learning environments.
  • Provide classroom presentations and in-service psychoeducation to students, staff and parents.
  • Create psychoeducational presentations for families at quarterly after school events.
  • Collaborate with principal, teachers and other support staff as necessary to meet the needs of students.
  • Actively participate in Grade Level Committees (GLC), Safety Committee, Crisis Response team, Professional Development (PD), 504 meetings and ARD/IEP meetings as it relates to specific students seen by the Social Work department.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school, mental health agencies, and community agencies to provide appropriate referrals, follow up with referrals and treatment for students and families in need.
  • Participation in regularly scheduled school counseling intern training, weekly intern supervision, case conferences and weekly individual or group supervision meetings. 
  • Ability to participate in required activities of School Counseling placement, including home visits and other community involvement functions.
  • Submit weekly case documentation to supervisor to review
  • Assist with creating SEL wellness events
  • Other duties as needed by the Social Work Department.
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:

  • Candidate must hold a Master’s degree  in Counseling from an accredited learning institution 
  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred but not required
