Job Title: Communications Specialist

Job Summary:

The role of Communications Specialist at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) offers a unique opportunity to contribute to national security by developing and implementing strategic communication plans that ensure financial integrity and stability within the Department of Defense. The diverse range of responsibilities within DFAS, from managing budgets to processing payments for military personnel and vendors, presents dynamic challenges that foster professional growth and contribute to the nation's defense efforts.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assisting in the development and management of content across various communication platforms, including websites, social media, newsletters, and press releases
    • This includes writing, editing, and ensuring content is accurate, engaging, and aligned with organizational goals
  • Supporting the implementation of strategic communication plans developed by senior staff, including helping to identify target audiences, key messages, and the most effective communication channels
  • Assisting in managing the organization's public relations efforts, which may include preparing media kits, responding to media inquiries under supervision, and maintaining a database of media contacts
  • Supporting the planning and execution of internal and external events, including conferences, seminars, and workshops, to promote organizational initiatives and engage with stakeholders
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of communication campaigns and strategies through various tools and metrics, and preparing reports on engagement, reach, and feedback from audiences
  • Assisting in the engagement activities with various stakeholder groups, including drafting communication materials tailored to different audiences, to foster positive relationships and promote the organization's objectives
  • Providing administrative support for the communications team, which may include scheduling meetings, managing digital assets, and maintaining records of communication activities
  • Working closely with other members of the communication team and cross-functional teams to ensure a cohesive and integrated approach to all communication efforts
  • Continuously learning and staying updated on industry best practices, emerging communication technologies, and trends to enhance skills and contribute to the team's success

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in a related discipline
  • 2+ years of direct or relevant industry experience
  • 1 year of experience providing support to executive levels
  • 1 year of experience in marketing/brand image public relations consulting
  • Experience in developing and deploying enterprise-level strategic communication plans with intentional messaging for targeted stakeholder groups both internal and external to the organization
  • Experience in developing and implementing comprehensive strategic communication plans that encompass branding, marketing, and internal and external communications
  • Demonstrated experience in providing direct support and advisory services to executive-level management, including the preparation of briefings, presentations, and strategic advisories

Desired:

  • Master's Degree in Communications, Business Administration, or a related discipline
  • 4+ years of relevant experience
  • 2+ years of experience providing support to executive levels
  • 2+ years of experience in marketing/brand image public relations consulting
  • Understanding of security requirements and compliance, especially relevant to working within defense or government sectors, to ensure that communications strategies and materials adhere to regulatory standards and guidelines

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Monday - Friday, normal working hours
  • Work is to be performed remotely
