Job description summary:

Our organization is seeking a highly skilled tool crib attendant and sharpener. This person is responsible for ensuring and maintaining an accurate inventory of maintenance, repair, and operations of consumable tooling (tool crib) as well as sharpening machine tooling. The tool crib attendant and sharpener is responsible for ordering and shipping tooling and maintaining the tooling database. They will also be responsible for operating tool room machinery including drill presses, manual grinding, and CNC tool grinder. This person must have mechanical aptitude and experience with metal cutting machines, be able to learn to sharpen tooling, and be able to use and read calipers and micrometers.

Essential duties & responsibilities:

  • Issue tools and equipment to machine shop personnel as well as record issues and returns
  • Perform inventory control functions such as filing, indexing, updating inventory records, and record tools received
  • Use the Kardex vertical lift to check tools in/out for inventory control
  • Inspect new and repaired tools and equipment for proper operation
  • Write requisitions for the repair or replacement of tools
  • Document and track the release of tools and equipment to vendors for repair and service
  • Perform inventory tasks as required
  • Perform necessary preventive maintenance and repairs on tools and equipment within the tool crib
  • Perform general cleanup, clerical, or maintenance work incidental to the operation of the tool crib
  • Create purchase orders in the company system for tool purchases and outside tool services
  • Ship and receive tooling from vendors
  • Must be able to learn and use the company ERP system and the tool management system
  • Must be able to support and understand machine shop vending machines
  • Manage tooling in multiple work areas
  • Check tooling availability and maintain tooling records and documentation
  • Coordinate tooling availability with members of the manufacturing team
  • Have a good understanding of the different tools used in a machine shop
  • Understand safe handling procedures of tools and grinders for the sharpening of machine shop tooling
  • Must be computer literate
  • Be physically able to stand for long periods of time
  • Be able to demonstrate basic math skills
  • Inspect tooling for wear and damage
  • Understand CNC machining and basic machine shop functions
  • Must be able to do basic data entry responsibilities
  • Must have solid problem-solving skills
  • Must be able to learn tool sharping using multiple manual and CNC machines within the tool crib
  • Must be able to learn how to set up and issue machine tooling using the Zoller tool pre-setter and software

Experience & skills:

  • Previous lead or supervisory experience is considered a plus
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience with industrial tooling or machine shop tooling. Additional related education may be substituted for work experience.
  • Good knowledge of machine shop and mechanical maintenance tools and their repair
  • CNC machine experience is considered a plus
  • Machine tool setup and building are considered a plus
  • Tool presetting is considered a plus
  • Must be computer literate
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to keep simple records and make arithmetic computations accurately
  • Experience reading micrometers and calipers preferred
  • Must be able to read basic blueprints/schematics
  • Must be able to obtain and retain a forklift license
