Feeding South Dakota, the state's largest charitable hungry relief organization, is seeking to hire an Operations Director at its Pierre location.

Job Summary

The Operations Director is responsible for recruiting, motivating, and leading a high-performance team whose responsibilities encompass warehouse and distribution operations, programs, fleet management, facility management and more throughout South Dakota. The Operations Director will provide proactive leadership focused on increasing efficient distribution throughout his/her assigned region.

Job Responsibilities

  • Directs the effective and efficient operations of the operations team including processes for receiving, inventory, repacking, storage, and distribution of food bank product to partner agencies and through direct program services.
  • Provides direct oversight to the management of all matters related to the maintenance and upkeep of the facility and grounds, including necessary modifications for purposes of safety, efficiency and/or proper function.
  • Ensures that all staff are aware of and comply with policies, procedures and regulations including governmental, Feeding America and AIB food safety and sanitation standards.
  • Ensures that all staff are aware of and comply with policies, procedures and regulations concerning workplace safety and OSHA reporting requirements specific to warehouse and trucking logistical operations. Oversees the annual review and necessary updating of SOP’s related to these operations.
  • Meets ongoing AIB requirements and obtains a satisfactory audit.
  • Maintains a current listing of all logistics and warehouse equipment including age and condition. Makes recommendations to the COO on necessary and appropriate maintenance items and equipment replacement schedules.
  • Maintains an awareness overall facilities condition and contact list for all facilities-related contractors needed for preventive building maintenance and repair. Makes recommendations to COO on all facility maintenance items and suggested improvements.
  • Ensures all operations staff receive the necessary basic and advanced training needed to perform their duties safely and efficiently.
  • Maintains an understanding, awareness of and ensures compliance with all relevant DOT regulations concerning CDL-licensed drivers, electronic logs, standard load weight restrictions and re-occurring license certification and DOT drug screening protocols. Works with COO and HR Generalist to ensure compliance with these regulations.
  • Provides oversight to operations, facilities, and fleet budget. Works with COO to build annual budget and makes suggestions on operations priorities.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with retail pickup program participants.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with relevant transportation and manufacturing companies.
  • Responsible for the BackPack program and assigning monitoring, relationship management to operations team accordingly.
  • Establishes a robust mobile food pantry distribution schedule .
  • Meets service area compliance in assigned geography .
  • Establishes and manages transportation activities to include delivery schedules and routes, mobile food pantry distributions, retail pickup program schedules, distribution center to distribution center deliveries, etc.
  • Serves as an active member of the food safety committee.
  • Hires, trains, and onboards staff.
  • Plays an active role in budget development while managing regional financial expenditures within budgetary and policy guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

Heavy Work: Heavy work involves lifting approximately 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing 50 pounds. If someone can do heavy work, it is also determined that they can also do sedentary, light, and medium work.

Qualifications

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree and at least two years of relevant experience in organizational and systems management is required. Warehouse management and logistics in material storage and transport as well as customer service are desired experiences for consideration or any combination of education and experience suitable to the hiring authority.

Must possess and demonstrate:

  • Integrity and commitment to fighting hunger in South Dakota
  • Ability to relate effectively with other staff, volunteers, agency representatives and the general public
  • Excellent oral, written and listening communication skills
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent people management skills to supervise and motivate staff and volunteers
