Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) manages the 10-year, $2.1 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office.

N3B is a limited liability company owned by HII Nuclear Inc. and BWX Technologies, joined by our critical subcontractors Longenecker and Associates and Tech2 Solutions.

N3B brings operational discipline, proven approaches and predictable results to the Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract.

Position Location:

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position Summary:

N3B is currently seeking a talented and motivated mid-career Electrical Engineer 3/4 to contribute their expertise to multiple projects as a lead design engineer. As part of our team, you'll be responsible for developing plans and specifications following applicable standards for a wide range of impactful tasks, ensuring the successful execution of projects and the continuous improvement of our operations. The candidate shall have an excellent understanding of the design process and ability to mentor other engineers. Assignments typically include a mixture of on-site and office duties. The successful candidate will be exposed to all phases of project development and have the ability to understand and apply the NEC to industrial electrical systems. The activities you will be supporting may include the design and/or sizing of transformers, power panels, control panels and updating VFD systems. Project design documentation may include system layouts and sizing, one-lines, wiring diagrams, equipment specifications, and transformer sizing to name a few. Excellent communication and organizational skills are required as well as the ability to multi-task and work independently and in a team. Duties will also include communication with and coordination of other engineering disciplines, other company divisions, and consultants, as needed, to complete projects.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who can multitask and pay close attention to detail. We are looking for someone with the ability to understand and apply codes, standards, policies, procedures, and the ability to communicate their implementation.

While working to achieve N3B objectives, the successful candidate will: ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner through maintaining required safety, security, and operational training. Making safety, security and quality an integral part of every task including taking the necessary steps to pause or stop work as necessary to ensure the safety and security personnel and the job site.

Responsibilities/ Duties (may include, but are not limited to):

  • Deliver top-notch solutions for various projects.
  • Prepare and present technical equipment data sheets, demonstrating your attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Craft technical equipment specifications.
  • Support field investigations or assessments. Collect data and gather information or documents. Perform standard computations or analysis.
  • Perform electrical design modeling to develop safe and reliable electrical power system designs including protection requirements.
  • Apply prescribed techniques and procedures in accordance with established criteria to perform assigned tasks.
  • Familiarity with system protection functions and controls in industrial power systems at low voltages (less than 1000v).
  • Develop plan layouts, system details, and one-line diagrams for lighting, power, security, and telecommunications systems designs
  • Oversee development of detailed design drawings and visual aids.
  • Willingness and ability to learn and use SKM, PTW, and/or other design/ analysis related software.
  • Selection of electrical equipment to meet the system requirements
  • Mentors and trains junior engineering staff
  • Preparation or modification of various types of reports, specifications, plans, forms, policies and procedures. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

Education and Experience Required:

Level 3: Bachelors’ of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or related fields from an ABET-accredited college or university. A minimum of five (5) years relevant experience, preferably in construction plan production, design calculations, project plan development, and technical writing. Have a focus towards leadership and delivering high quality solutions and products. Experience with load flow, short circuit analysis, and arc flash hazards system analysis software is a plus.

Level 4: Bachelors’ of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or related fields from an ABET-accredited college or university. With a minimum of nine (9) years relevant experience, preferably in construction plan production, design calculations, project plan development, and technical writing. Currently licensed as a PE (or will be eligible for licensure within 1 year) is preferred.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Normally assigned to perform work in an office environment with occasional field work. Electrical hazards and other minor potential hazards normally found in an office environment are anticipated. Minor hazards normally found in a northern New Mexico field data collection environment are anticipated. Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the discipline. Office and field work environment.
