Axiom is seeking a Physical Scientist III to be a Quality Lead. The Quality Lead's primary role is to lead an interdisciplinary Quality Management Team comprised of scientists and technicians. This role will serve as one of the main focal points for a state-of-the-art Pressure Standards Laboratory. The Quality lead will work with Laboratory Management and a team of technicians to provide customer support, when necessary, to field sites utilizing operational barometers. The Quality Lead will also work diligently to provide subject matter expert guidance on laboratory testing in support of the National Weather Service's Surface and Upper Air Division. This role will be responsible for overseeing and assisting in calibration and testing cycles within five meteorological laboratories. The Quality Lead will oversee and implement improvements to each laboratory's measurement model, processes, and procedures as a means towards ISO 17025 compliance. When necessary the Quality Lead will implement necessary procedures and plans to ensure best practices are utilized in the testing and calibration laboratories at the Sterling Field Support Center. The Quality Lead will work with Laboratory Management to ensure that the laboratories are in an operational state and nonconformities are handled in a timely and appropriate manner which includes asset management. The Quality Lead will work towards supporting the National Weather Service's Surface and Upper Air Division by implementing new technology into the testing programs and laboratories at the Sterling Field Support Center. Specific duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee and ensure quality control/assurance procedures are utilized during calibrations and testing.
  • Oversee the testing and calibration of meteorological reference and field sensors and systems.
  • Creating and implementing quality assurance practices for a testing and calibration laboratory setting.
  • Research and implement processes and procedures alongside laboratory management that adhere to national and international standards.
  • Oversee documentation control within a Quality Management Structure, which includes but is not limited to implementing templates, methods, and procedures that ensure the effective control of documentation as they pertain to laboratory management and program testing.
  • Prepare test plans and reports for special projects related to sensors and equipment, which includes but is not limited to international collaborative projects and new technology implementation.
  • When necessary, perform audits within a laboratory setting to ensure the conformance of testing and calibrations.

Required Skills

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor's of Science Degree in physical science or experience in the field of metrology which shall include experience leading a quality management program.
  • Experience conducting testing on meteorological sensors and/or systems. (3-5 years)
  • Knowledge and professional understanding of national and international standards which includes but is not limited to ISO 17025 or MIL-STD 810 G (1-2 years).
  • Experience leading a team or overseeing projects as they relate to testing or calibration programs.
  • Ability to oversee an inter-disciplinary and diverse team of scientists and technicians.
  • Strong technical writing skills including drafting standard operating procedures, test plans, and test reports. (3-5 years)
  • Experience in a calibration or testing laboratory setting (3-5 years)
  • Understanding of basic laboratory safety processes. (2-3 years)
  • Ability to multi-task and work on a variety of projects at any given time. (2-3 years)
  • Extensive knowledge of atmospheric properties (pressure, temperature, humidity) (5+ years)
  • Basic understanding of data analysis for measurement data and ability to use data analysis tools (3-5 years).
  • Understanding of Quality Assurance Principles and best laboratory practices. (3-5 years)

Desired Skills

  • Experience using GAGEpack or another asset management software.
  • Experience using a Quality Management Software or Database.
  • Experience implementing document or version control measures.
