Job Description

Job Title: Lead Scientific Technical Writer/Editor

Job Summary:

This role will support the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) investigation of the impacts of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico under the National Construction Safety Team (NCST) Act. The NIST Engineering Laboratory (EL) requires scientific and engineering technical writing support, including scientific and engineering content editing, engineering graphic visualization, report layout assistance, and proofreading in both English and Spanish for the Hurricane Maria NCST investigation and NWIRP study.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Producing high visibility reports which have wide distribution
  • Organizing chapters written by several authors to read as one voice
  • Editing functional descriptions, system specifications, special reports, or any other customer deliverables and documents
  • Proofreading and translating content from English to Spanish and vice versa
  • Coordinating with other technical writers

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • Fluency in English and Spanish, both spoken and written
  • 10+ years of relevant experience, 7+ of which must be specialized, such as the below:
    • Editing documents, including technical documents
    • Work on a set of published reports, with individual reports of at least 400 pages, including multiple chapters or sections, and a total page count of at least 1,500 pages for the set of reports
    • Technical writing on topics related to engineering
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage the publication of a large, complex document
  • Knowledge and skills in technical documentation and presentation techniques including technical writing, technical proofreading, and technical editing
  • An understanding of engineered physical systems and their unique terminology

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Monday - Friday, normal working hours
  • Work is to be performed remotely
