Job Title: Caregiver/Attendant

Department: Adult Day Care Center

Reports To: Program DirectorSalary Grade: NE1

Position Summary:

Works to improve the quality of life among the members of Santa Clara Pueblo by caring for elderly, convalescent, or disabled persons in the Santa Clara Regional Adult Day Care Center

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Changes bed linens, and cleans patient quarters.
  • Prepares, and serves food for patient following special prescribed diets.
  • Assists patients into and out of bed, automobile, or wheelchair, to lavatory, and up and down stairs.
  • Assists patient to dress, bathe, and groom self.
  • Massages patient and applies preparations and treatments such as liniment or alcohol rubs and heat lamp stimulation.
  • Assists patient with exercises.
  • Accompanies ambulatory patients outside center, serving as guide, companion, and aide.
  • Entertains patient, reads aloud, and plays cards or other games with patient.
  • Maintains records of services performed and of apparent condition of patient.
  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as requested.
  • On occasion may be assigned to transport assigned clients to doctors appointments
  • On occasion may be assigned to assist with routing maintenance at the Senior Program Responsible for additional assigned tasks as needed

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Capacity to obtain certificate in practical nursing.
  • Capability of exhibiting proper food handling techniques.
  • Possession of New Mexico Drivers license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to be certified in CPR and First Aid
  • Capacity to interact and communicate effectively with patients, family members, outside vendors, and other employees of the organization.
  • Competence in writing routine reports and correspondence.
  • Understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Support training and supervision of junior and new Staff Members in all aspects of their work in the Care Centre, under the supervision of senior Staff Members.
  • Pay particular attention to assisting Clients who have limited mobility or physical / learning difficulties making the best use of aids provided.
  • Assist in the promotion of continence
  • Ensure the highest possible levels of care are maintained by supporting/assisting Clients, when required, with all aspects of daily living.
  • Support training and supervision of junior and new Staff Members in all aspects of their work in the Care Centre, under the supervision of senior Staff Members.
  • Assist Clients in all aspects of their care needs (e.g. physical, emotional and spiritual). Provide supervision and attention when needed, ensuring Clients retain their comfort and dignity.
  • Pay particular attention to assisting Clients who have limited mobility or physical / learning difficulties making the best use of aids provided.
  • Closely monitor Clients who may be confused and/or who have behavioral problems.
  • Assist in the promotion of continence.
  • Assist in the delivery of care for Clients who are dying or who have a progressive illness. Assist with last offices.
  • Complete, observe & review care planning needs for Clients, and complete written daily records as instructed and in line with the Santa Clara's Adult Day Care Center policies and procedures.
  • Assist in framework of social activities by interacting with Clients and helping them continue with hobbies and activities in the Care Centre.
  • Carry out regular checks on Clients at intervals determined by senior Staff Members.
  • Make Visitors feel welcome. Provide refreshments/assistance as and when required.
  • Assist Clients who need help during meal times (be aware of swallowing difficulties, dietary requirements etc). Assist with serving of food / drinks as requested / required. Wash up as requested / required.
  • Escort Clients travelling to and from the Care Centre e.g. on social outings, hospital visits etc.
  • Ensure all holistic assessments are carried out when Clients are admitted to the Care Centre e.g. covering nutritional and incontinence issues, risk assessment etc.
  • Communication:
  • Participate in Staff and Client meetings as and when required.
  • Training and Development:
  • Maintain professional knowledge and competence.
  • Attend mandatory training days/courses, on or off site, as and when required.
  • Participate in relevant N/SVQ training to achieve required qualifications.


Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma, GED, or experience. Certification in food handlers required. 40 hours of training in the delivery of services to frail elderly. Satisfactory Police check and check against the POVA List (where applicable)


Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
