Summary of Duties of the Fitness Instructor
The Fitness Instructor is responsible for implementing standards of exercise, wellness, and senior health at the community and overseeing accurate documentation concerning programming and participation in the fitness program.

Essential Functions of the Fitness Instructor
  • Follow established regulatory and company policies and procedures.
  • Encourages participation in exercise programs throughout the community which may include: Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care neighborhoods as well as employee programs.
  • Ensures diversity in classes to cover the six dimensions of wellness, which include: physical, social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and occupational aspects of life.
  • Collaborate with Life Enrichment Director to enhance and implement programming.
  • Conducts Fitness Center orientation for residents, as applicable.
  • Offers and encourages private personal training sessions.
  • Coordinate with other departments, i.e. marketing, food service, activities, administration, housekeeping, and maintenance, to ensure the highest quality of life for residents.
  • Maintain a clean and organized Fitness Center and other areas that are used for physical activity. This includes sanitizing fitness equipment on a daily basis, vacuuming, dusting, and keeping smaller equipment stored properly so as to not pose any safety or tripping hazards.
  • Discuss with the Executive Director regarding what equipment would be beneficial to have for Senior Fitness Training and place the equipment orders accordingly.
  • Make sure hand sanitizer, tissues, cups, and water are readily available to the residents in the Fitness Center at all times.
  • If approached by a resident's family member to begin personal training with the resident, provide up to date training progress to the family member as long as there is consent given from the resident.
  • If a resident is finishing up physical therapy and will be moving onto corrective/personal training, discuss with the Physical Therapist what they have been focusing on so as to provide the best flow of progress for the resident.
  • Conducts routine safety inspections on all equipment.
  • Responds to emergencies in the Fitness Center in a prompt, calm manner.
  • Participate in resident care conferences and other community meetings as requested.
  • Support the mission, vision, and culture of the organization through positive communication and leadership.
  • Attend staff and leadership team meetings and stand-ups meetings as scheduled.
  • Maintain punctual attendance.
  • Maintain professional dress and appearance at all times.
  • Adheres to all company policies, procedures, rules, and expectations.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Non-Essential Functions of the Fitness Instructor
  • Act on constructive feedback by listening to supervisor, residents, and peers and use it to improve performance.
  • Maintain resident, employee, and community confidentiality.
  • Know, follow, and understand resident's rights.
  • Demonstrate positive attitude and ability to work well with all people, particularly seniors.
  • Promote positive work environment that emphasizes teamwork.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience
  • Minimum of an Associates Degree in Fitness, Health Science, or another related program.
  • Possess a genuine loving and caring attitude for seniors.
  • Must have up to date CPR, AED, and First Aid Certifications.
  • Continued education on Fall Prevention and Balance Training.
  • Have the ability to train and teach.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in Senior Wellness and Exercise.
  • Must maintain computer skills and proficiency of Microsoft Excel, Word and Publisher.
  • Must be able to work well with others, have problem solving skills, a valid driver's license, and transportation means for work related projects.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.
  • Physical requirements include: bending, standing, lifting, stooping, sitting, carrying, stretching, and walking; Must have manual dexterity to operate a vehicle safely.
  • Be free of communicable disease.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak in English.
