Job Description

Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the HIM Department. Maintains budget, oversees staff, and interacts with physicians and department directors.

  • Reviews medical documentation and reviews assigned medical codes in order for billing to occur.
  • Provides accurate and timely reports for patient care, documentation, and billing.
  • Tracks, processes, and evaluates requests for release of medical information.
  • Monitors departments-based quality and compliance monitoring. Evaluates activities and recommends measures to ensure that Joint Commission and other quality regulatory standards are met.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and trains medical records staff in HIPAA standards.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of existing and emerging requirements related to privacy and confidentiality of health information.
  • Develops policies, protocols, and standards for evaluating and implementing the HIM process.
  • Provides information to physicians on those patients being treated by them as requested and reviews the records for compliance with State, Federal and private insurance guidelines.
  • Demonstrates the ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Provides leadership and direction regarding improving department performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • RHIT certification required.
  • Previous experience in a psychiatric setting preferred.
  • Ability to maintain information as highly confidential.
  • Knowledge of interpreting and applying laws, standards, and regulations affecting health information systems, specifically in behavioral health service areas.
