Summary – The Nature Education Intern, under the general direction of the Education Manager, is responsible for planning, organizing, and presenting educational programs and events. It is the responsibility of the Nature education Intern to complete all assigned duties, tasks, instructions, and/or work orders in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. This position is suitable for transitional duty.

Primary Responsibilities Function Priority Percentage (Should = 100%)

Assist in Educational Programing…….……………………………………….…………………..………………………….…90%

  • Present and prepare special events, school programs, and public education programs
  • Educate the public on relevant subjects including nature, history, culture, agriculture, horticulture, and conservation
  • Answer visitor questions, resolve issues, and share site information
  • Work with volunteers to assist in education training and knowledge sharing
  • Review, approve and maintain all necessary records including but not limited to program numbers and inventories

  • Provide intra-departmental support
  • Perform receptionist duties at Ford Nature Center including answering phones, greeting visitors, and completing retail transactions as needed
  • Keep supervisors informed of essential issues and report disturbance to proper authorities
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with coworkers, visitors, and vendors
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential Knowledge, Abilities and Skills



  • Must be able to maintain a continuous positive attitude and professional appearance
  • Regular and predictable attendance
  • Knowledge of current industry standard practices, trends, techniques, laws, regulations, and best management practices within the fields of natural history and education
  • Must possess proficient technological skills and abilities including the operation of standard computer equipment, software, social media and smart phone capabilities
  • Excellent customer service skills and public speaking skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and effectively to a wide variety of audiences in both verbal and written form

Education/Qualifications

  • Must possess and retain a valid Driver’s License
  • Current college student in the K-8 education field or two years’ experience in education occupation.
  • Experience working with children required.

Physical Requirements Necessary to Perform Job Functions

  • Must be physically able to perform all tasks inherent to the position
  • Ability to see, hear and effectively communicate with others
  • Ability to walk, traverse, or otherwise access trails of all types, natural terrain, construction sites and all properties under control of Mill Creek MetroParks under all types of conditions
  • Ability to perform work in indoor and outdoor environments in cold and heat
  • Ability to stand, sit, bend, stoop, and walk for lengthy periods of time and walk up/down stairs, ladders, etc.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds
  • Ability to use computer workstation, including keyboard and visual display terminal, for extended periods of time
  • Hand dexterity: ability to pull, push, reach and grab freely

Job Requirement

The Nature Education Intern is required to be available as the situation warrants. Events may require working evenings, weekends, holidays, or other times outside of what is considered a normal schedule.
