Position Summary

The POLYWOOD Design Team is looking for a talented Industrial Designer to play a key role crafting outdoor furniture designs that blend style, function, and beauty. POLYWOOD is the pioneer and industry-leading manufacturer of outdoor furniture made from recycled plastics. As an Industrial Designer at POLYWOOD, you will bring outdoor furniture concepts to life through sketching, computer modeling, and physical prototyping. You will work with the Sales and Marketing Teams to translate product ideas into visual concepts for customer consideration. Your 3D SolidWorks models will be built, evaluated, and perfected through collaboration with the Product Development, Engineering, and Quality Teams. Since prototyping and manufacturing both take place on-campus, your 3D models become full-scale, production-level prototypes in a matter of days, allowing you to evaluate concepts in real life and real time. After your products have been finalized and released to Production, you’ll experience the satisfaction of learning how your designs are being used and enjoyed by consumers across the country.


Responsibilities:

  • Create sketches that visually illustrate design ideas
  • Work closely with other Design Team members on concepts for future products and designs
  • Develop detailed 3D models of furniture using SolidWorks CAD software
  • Partner with the Product Development Team to evaluate prototypes, develop new assembly methods, and prepare products for Manufacturing
  • Collaborate with the Engineering and Quality Teams to consider alternative construction options that achieve the optimal balance between design intent, manufacturing efficiencies, and product performance
Requirements:
  • Bachelors of Industrial Design or related field preferred - experience preferred but willing to train a fresh grad with awesome potential
  • Understand the basic process of design (could be gained in school)
  • Ability to provide a portfolio of design work (gained through schooling or on the job)
  • Understanding of physical connectivity methods (traditional joinery, use of fasteners, etc.)
  • Practical application of physics (static loads, deflections, forces, etc.)
  • Mechanically minded with the ability to work with hands in a workshop environment
  • Proficient use of 3D CAD modeling software (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop)
  • Creative and inventive problem solver with an eye for aesthetic detail
  • Ability to develop consumer products that are practical, appealing, and clever
  • Clearly communicate design ideas both visually and verbally
  • Creativity, curiosity, and a desire to continuously learn and improve
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative, team-focused environment
  • Strong follow through and willingness to take responsibility for tasks through to completion


Bonus points if:

  • Experience with product design and manufacturing using plastic, metal, wood, fabric and cushion materials
  • Prior experience in professional design, including consumer products and/or furniture designs a bonus
