REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Reports to unit manager. Works under supervision of a Registered Nurse and in collaboration with other health care professionals.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

One on one nursing preceptorship to enhance nursing knowledge, awareness of nursing role, enhancing confidence, acclimation to environment, and socialization to the team. Under supervision of RN preceptor and in collaboration with other care professionals, assists in performing a variety of nursing care services for patients.

 

PROGRAM DETAILS

Work one on one with a registered nurse preceptor under direct supervision in the clinical setting. Engage in required didactic educational assignments as scheduled. Participation in progress evaluations required.

Upon completion of the orientation requirements, the nursing apprentice is required to work a minimum of 24 hours a month as a nursing apprentice until transition into the nursing residency in addition to ongoing educational requirements. If a nursing apprentice does not accept or receive a residency position during the designated hiring period for their anticipated graduation date, their position as a nursing apprentice will be transitioned out of the nursing apprentice program and into another appropriate position as available.

Must maintain enrollment in accredited nursing program during Nursing Apprenticeship with exception of graduation from the program and awaiting to take NCLEX exam.

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES

*All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise*

1. Nursing Apprentice works under direct supervision of an RN preceptor

2. Perform duties related to nursing care and nursing process as noted in Table A: Role Functions of the Nursing Apprentice.

3. Other duties as assigned.

 

ROLE FUNCTIONS OF NURSING APPRENTICE

ASSESS

• Data collection & documentation of patient health status

• Participate in patient rounds

PLAN

• Reports observations about patient’s condition to RN & physician

• Communicate with RN regarding Plan of Care & Patient/Family Education

• Communicates with RN regarding the organization of assignments based on priorities

IMPLEMENT

• Perform skills, treatments or interventions provided they have performed successful educational validation and delegation of RN preceptor

• Observes & discusses medication administration, IV therapy by the RN & other skills/interventions not authorized for Nursing Apprentice to perform

• May not receive physician orders

• May not delegate or supervise care

EVALUATE

• Reports noted changes to the registered nurse.

• Participate in personal clinical and didactic evaluation process


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Enrollment in an accredited nursing program and successful completion of first clinical semester.

Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) completed within orientation period.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Personal Protective Equipment: Must Demonstrate knowledge and use of standard precautions and personal protective equipment.

Physical Demands:

• Must be able to move about hospital and between workstations, and prolonged periods of standing.

• Must be able to understand directions and be able to communicate and respond to inquiries with effective people skills.

• Frequent prolonged standing / walking

• Lifts, positions, pushes, or transfers patients

• Must be able to read and speak the English language

• Must be able to see, hear and move intermittently, or use prosthetics that will enable you to function adequately to assure that the requirements of this position can be fully met

• Must be able to occasionally provide aid, and assist with lifting, moving, or carrying very heavy weight, which may be materials or equipment needed for patient care or patients.

Working Conditions:

• Frequent exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements

• May be exposed to odorous / hazardous specimens

• Regularly exposed to infection / contagious disease

• Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens from blood and/or bodily fluids
