What we do:

The Cell Engineering Manager will focus on developing the cell engineering team for Energy Storage Systems (ESS). The primary responsibility of this role will be to build our labs and other testing capabilities to qualify internal and external cell programs for use in various aircraft. Additionally, the Cell Engineering Manager will be tasked with building our data science, cell testing, and algorithms team to create a complete value chain for cell engineering. Finally, they will provide leadership and management to a group of cell test engineers and equipment engineers.

This position will be required to work on-site 5 days a week.

What you can do:
  • Develop cell testing protocols to qualify new programs and enable the next generation of cell control strategies in product
  • Analyze test results to provide the cell limits that optimize performance and reliability
  • Expand cell characterization and testing efforts to keep up with the demand for all aircraft programs
  • Create and drive the safety culture to ensure that advanced cells can be tested safely
  • Use electrochemical/chemical tests to interpret and quantify degradation modes of various battery chemistries traced back to battery material properties
  • Collaborate with the commercial and manufacturing teams to identify, interface, and assess multisource suppliers' technical and commercial capability and quality control
  • Coordinate and evaluate physical, electrochemical, and safety properties of multi-source battery materials from powder/liquid form to full cell to define and determine levels of consistency
  • Organize technical reviews for engineering leadership on the quality of new and emerging technologies
  • Partner with the investment team to ascertain long-term planning and partner with advanced cell chemistries and design
  • Collaborate with the BMS team to develop ECM models for implementation in the flight control architecture
  • Represent Cell Engineering in various programs and collaborate on HV architecture development
  • Partner with PMO organization to implement build plan
  • Up to 10% of domestic and international travel
  • Other duties as assigned
What you can contribute:
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or similar field required; Master’s degree preferred
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of experience in cell engineering (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered)
  • Experience selecting cells for various applications and understanding certifications such as UN38.3. DO-160, DO-254, DO-178 and ISO-26262
  • Experience with thermal testing, analytical modeling, and simulation of lithium-ion batteries
  • Experience in creating DOEs for analyzing different aspects of a cell design and its form factor
  • Experience with creating a safe environment for testing new and advanced cell chemistries
  • Experience leading a team of technicians and engineers in a lab environment
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in electrochemical cells, heat transfer, fluids, Li-ion, analytical modeling, and failure analysis
  • Knowledge of the construction and fundamentals of a cell and principles of operation
  • Knowledge of energy, power, and capacity of cell-to-pack design
  • Familiarity with various pack design architectures and how they relate to cell selection
  • Knowledge of cell testing equipment, chemical analyses, and lab development
  • Familiar with EV or eVTOL battery pack requirements and development at the cell level
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proactive delivery of communication and follow up
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Must have the ability to independently prioritize and accomplish work within time constraints
  • Proficiency with Excel VLOOKUP, pivot tables, MS Office Suite

Base pay offered may vary depending on skills, experience, job-related knowledge and location. This position is also eligible for a bonus as part of total compensation.
The pay range for this position is:
$192,400$289,120 USD
