GENERAL SUMMARY: Under general supervision, exercises judgment within established guidelines to provide the administrative support needed to coordinate and direct the activities necessary to provide quality services to patients of all ages. Provides guidance and makes decisions on issues concerning budget constraints, appropriate placement of patient admissions and staffing resources, legal matters, crisis intervention, and continuing education. Ensures quality and safe delivery of care to patients in the following age groups: All ages; Neonate; Infancy; Toddler; Preschool; School age; Adolescent; Adult; Geriatric.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. CLINICAL

Demonstrates clinical problem solving abilities and ability to function in emergency situations in a knowledgeable and effective manner. Will facilitate proper use of equipment by staff delivering care and patient placement and determine the need to mobilize or adjust additional staff and/or beds. Conducts rounds of all patient care areas frequently and communicates with staff. Is responsible for the centralized staffing program and adjusts staffing coverage to meet patient care needs if required. Defines expectations to staff for accurate reporting with emphasis on problematic patients. Collaborates with health care team to ensure comprehensive patient care through timely assessment and intervention. Provides leadership and direction to the nursing staff until a member of the medical staff assumes responsibility in an ACLS situation per Hospital policy. Serves as a resource person for all staff.

  1. Supports the organizational, departmental, and unit goals and objectives.
  2. Supports the staff in the change process by providing information and rationale for change.
  3. Collaborates with Nurse Manager or designee to assure facilitation of education plan or assigned shifts.
  1. LEADERSHIP

Takes proactive approach in developing and maintaining a positive image with the public and health care team members. Demonstrates initiative and good judgment in reaching decisions, knowledge of the job, and key requirements for each position. Independently identifies opportunities to offer additional support to staff. Will make managerial and clinical judgments in assigning duties. Takes immediate action in disciplinary situations and communicates actions to the appropriate Nurse Manager in a timely manner. Works closely with the Nurse Manager and Directors to support the orientation process. Completes quarterly and annual report, documenting pertinent information about staffing, morale, or any nursing issue, that can be utilized by nursing operations to address these issues in an effective manner. Encourages open communications by utilization of various methods to foster a positive, professional environment. Develops and utilizes a central communication process with Nurse Managers and Directors. Assumes administrative responsibility in the absence of Hospital Administration and appropriately identifies when to notify the Administrator on Call of problematic situations.

  1. FISCAL

Is responsible for the nursing personnel budget for the designated patient unit and all use of per diem and overtime in staffing units. Flexes to census, cancels agency personnel, approves overtime.

  1. QUALITY IMPROVEMENT/DEVELOPMENT/SERVICE

Understands own role in the Hospital and unit based Performance Improvement Program. Adheres to Hospital and unit safety plan and is responsible for incident reporting and follow-up. Follows Hospital policies and procedures and supports staff in adjustments to policy changes.

  1. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT/EDUCATION

Maintains BLS and ACLS certification. Participates in committee activities of the Department of Nursing Services and assumes responsibilities incurred. Maintains attendance at mandatory programs.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  1. The level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through a Bachelor's Degree in nursing. Current licensure as a registered nurse in Massachusetts. Minimum of three years’ critical care experience preferred.
  1. Previous management experience preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Patient care environment.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting; prolonged standing, walking, bending, and stooping.
  • Potential contact with blood and body fluids.
