GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the installation and maintenance of water distribution and transmission and sewage collection systems; construction of sewage pump stations and well houses. Work is performed under direct supervision of the Construction Foreman.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

• Performs work in the installation of water distribution mains, sanitary sewer mains.

• Performs work in the construction of sewage pump stations and well house structures.

• Works as part of a crew to assist in the maintenance and repair of water and sewer lines to include mains and service lines.

• Assists in maintaining, inspecting water and sewer lines, water distribution and transmission and sewage collection systems.

• Assists in the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of all equipment and tools used in the performance of duties.

• Operates a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks; operates dump trucks, pickup trucks, service trucks, loaders/backhoes, excavators, trailers and tampers; loads and unloads dirt, gravel, and other materials as required.

• Operates riding and push mowers, chainsaws and weed whackers to clear easements; cuts and trims grass, seeds and maintain sewer or water line right-of-way as required.

• Repairs structures other than sewer systems., buildings, vaults, wetwells, and treatment plants, etc. Restores areas disturbed by digging.

• Follows appropriate safety procedures at all times.

• Deemed essential personnel.

• Available to work on an on-call, as needed basis.

• Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Basic knowledge of water and sewer line construction work; basic knowledge of equipment, materials and techniques used in pipeline construction and maintenance and repair of water distribution and sewage collection systems; basic knowledge of and demonstrated ability to use hand and power tools; ability to read and interpret basic construction plans; demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective work relations with co-workers, employees and supervisors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school and six months experience in water distribution and sewage collection systems construction, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Ability to perform manual physical work; ability to climb and work in and out of open excavations, manholes, vaults and lift heavy objects; ability to work in various weather conditions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

• Possession of a valid Virginia Driver’s License which is free of violations for a period of three years.

• Valid Class A Virginia Commercial Driver’s License preferred.

• Must pass a pre-employment drug, alcohol and background screening.
