DEFINITION

Under supervision, to keep assigned building spaces clean and orderly; to prepare rooms for meetings; and to perform related work as required.


CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this classification report to the Department Support Manager. This position requires previous custodian and general maintenance experience, performs structured work which varies and is performed in accordance with established verbal or written instructions. Incumbents receive thorough instructions when tasks are initially assigned and after training are expected to perform duties with minimal supervision. Work is reviewed periodically upon completion and while in progress. Incumbents are expected to refer most variations in work to the supervisor for instructions.

Examples of Duties

Cleans offices and other areas in public buildings; sweeps, mops, strips and waxes floors; vacuums carpeted areas; dusts and polishes stainless steel and furniture, woodwork and Venetian blinds; replenishes supplies; cleans base-boards; cleans stoves and ovens; performs repair work to plumbing fixtures; cleans appliances; sweeps sidewalks and entry ways; cleans blackboards; coordinates inventory and stocking of restroom and cleaning supplies; sets-up rooms for meetings; empties and cleans waste receptacles; washes windows; polishes metal work; turns out lights and locks doors and windows; responds to emergency call-back services; washes solar panels; maintains and coordinates SDS data catalogs at all janitorial supply locations; acts as a liaison between the City and outsourced janitorial supply and service vendors; labels chemicals and cleaners used in the performance of custodial duties to OSHA's current Globalized and Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals; performs building and related equipment maintenance repair work; assists Facilities Maintenance staff with project clean-up as needed; operates machinery and equipment necessary for the performance of assigned duties; maintains proper care of equipment and materials used to perform work assignments; assists in the training of less experienced staff; and performs related work as required.

Typical Qualifications

LICENSE REQUIRED

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License, and a good driving record.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of commercial or government facility custodial service experience.


QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of technical supervision and leadership;
  • Basic math;
  • Proper methods, material, chemicals, disinfectants, safety practices, and equipment used in the custodial trade;
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Ability to:

  • Perform routine and specialized cleaning work, including washing, dusting, waxing, polishing, and sweeping;
  • Work independently without direct supervision;
  • Operate, maintain, and inventory janitorial equipment and supplies;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with the public, City staff, and vendors;
  • Maintain a positive attitude toward serving the public and City Departments;
  • Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Establish and maintain effective professional relationships with those contacted during the course of work;
  • Work indoors and outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions;
  • Work in confined spaces including attics;
  • Work at heights using ladders, scissor lifts, and related equipment;
  • Coordinate the work of subordinate staff and volunteers;
  • Operate a computer and maintain computer records;
  • Work irregular shifts as required;
  • May be scheduled to work modified workweeks including evenings and weekends.
Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Strength: Medium work-lifting, carrying and/or pushing 75 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Other physical requirements include: feeling, finger dexterity, frequent grasping, and holding, reaching, bending, climbing, crawling, and balancing, standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, and stooping on level and uneven surfaces;
  • May work in environments where dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, and fumes are present.

Applicants must meet each qualification for the position by the deadline date. All applications will be reviewed based on the necessary employment standards for the position. Candidates receiving a passing score may be placed on an eligibility list for a period of up to one (1) year. Examinations and department interviews for the position will be administered in the City of Clovis. As determined by the City and at the City's expense, successful candidates shall be required to complete and pass a medical examination, a drug/alcohol screen, and a background investigation. Possession of a valid California Driver's License and a good driving record will be required prior to hire. Proof of citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.
