Our fun, hands-on learning summer camp is looking for a PAID Photography Intern to capture the excitement, thrill, and satisfaction kids learn by making in a summer camp environment! This position is for those interested in gaining experience as a photographer working with clients and navigating those needs and expectations.  

What will I do?

With guidance from the Potomac School Director and DEAN Adventure Camps Site Director, you’ll be directed on how to approach documenting the joy of camp.  Your role will mainly be taking photos of all the various activities taking place on the Potomac School Campus. From sewing to soccer, to swimming to robotics, every program will give you an opportunity to express your creativity to get the shots that tell the story.  Generally, photos you are tasked with taking will be geared towards parent communication and social media. 

Also as a part of this position, your role will be to become integrated into DEAN Adventure Camp programs at the Potomac School. You are not just behind the camera. There will be times when you must support the DEAN Team in supervising campers and ensuring camp is running smoothly. You will represent the core values of Trust, Care, Education, and Creativity at DEAN Adventure Camps when working at The Potomac School and with the Potomac School staff.

We’d love to schedule a first-round interview with you if:

  • You’re available 40 hours a week, 8 am-4 pm, Mon.-Fri. From June 17th to August 2nd. 
  • You have your own DSLR camera - and you’ve got the basics down.
  • You love to spend time around kids and understand, and we're excited that you will also support DEAN Adventure Camps programs as needed.
  • You understand the basics of social media and crafting a narrative.
  • You’ve been to camp, love camp, and want to be in a camp environment.
  • You're comfortable learning new tools (Google Drive, Asana, Slack, etc.)
  • You’ve got a visual eye and want to hone your craft.
  • If your photographic style focuses on action shots, a more journalistic style to tell the story and capture facial expressions exuding joy.
  • You’re comfortable operating independently and without constant supervision.
  • You are comfortable using the Adobe Suite of applications such as Photoshop and Lightroom - but would like more practice, especially working with a client and the client's needs.
  • You can commit to a schedule with a daily shot list that involves navigating a 90-acre campus during the summer months and various weather elements.
  • You thrive in an environment where no two days look the same.

 

Bonus Points (but not required):

  • A willingness to learn. Jump in and learn new hands-on skills from our wide range of programming:
    • Learn by Making: Sewing, building, baking, cooking, fashion, woodworking, writing, illustrating, coding and robotics, etc.
    • Learn by Doing: Biking, skateboarding, parkour, sports, building, exploration, etc.
    • Learn by Playing: Creative play with 3-5-year-olds through STEAM, cooking/baking, and dance movement. 

 Important Notes to Consider Before Applying

  • This is a PAID position. 
  • This is ideal for an internship candidate
  • This is for a college or university student who is enrolled for the upcoming fall semester.
  • This is an in-person position.
  • This is a temporary position from mid-June to mid-August.
  • The position is Monday-Friday, 8 am-4 pm 40 hours a week.
  • You must submit a portfolio or link to a collection of your work.

Criteria for Portfolio

  • At least 7 to 15 photos to be included in your portfolio
  • Documentary or Journalistic photography style
  • Natural photos – not over-edited with too much color and dark corners
  • Clean and sharp photos
  • Candid photography
  • Action photography
  • Focus on capturing facial expression
