Job Description

Weld material with the proper materials to the correct dimensions, tolerances, and/or other specifications as defined on the work instructions. This process will include applying metal banding to cut-outs, end trim band, load band, working with others as part of a team, and requiring the ability to coordinate and communicate. A supervisor reviews work to ensure quality and accuracy.


Will work under the direction of the shop supervisor, a leader, 1st class mechanic, or 1st class mechanic / welder, and must be capable of performing the duties of both a mechanic 2nd class and welder 2nd class.
The mechanic / welder 2nd class, must be able to integrate their mechanic and welding abilities to carry out a variety of assignments involving, but not necessarily limited to, the fabrication and assembly of miscellaneous structures, requiring layout, assembly, and welding techniques on a diverse line of products.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carry out a variety of assignments involving, but not necessarily limited to, the fabrication and assembly of miscellaneous structures, requiring layout and assembly
    techniques on a diverse line of products.
  • Must be able to read and fabricate from drawings and sketches.
  • Must have the ablilit to organize and direct the activities of welders, and helpers assigned to your
    job(s).
  • Direct, assist, and at times train other workers in the use of equipment, techniques, and processes in which the other worker is less familiar.
  • Use and setup various tools and shop equipment including; shears, saws, drill presses, punches, brakes, and forming machines.
  • Use, and assist in the development of appropriate fixturing to clamp and hold work to obtain proper alignments during assembly and to prevent strain and distortion during welding.
  • Check both in-process and completed work to ascertain that it complies to both the
    drawings and specifications.
  • Weld a variety of assignments involving the routine welding, tacking, and assembly, of a diverse line of products and structures which may include some all-position
    welding operations.
  • Be able to read and interpret welding symbols, perform welding related layout,assembly, weld edge preparation, and tacking.
  • Direct, assist, and at times train other welders in the use of equipment, techniques,and processes in which the other welder is less familiar.
  • Be able to setup welding equipment and be proficient in performing such processes as MIG, TIG, Stick, automatic welding, cutting, and burning, to complete welded
    assemblies using aluminum, steel, and stainless steel.
  • Regulate and adjust equipment controls to produce welded joints that comply with the stated specifications or welding procedures.
  • Inspect welds visually for defects using the necessary gages and other instruments to ascertain their compliance to drawings and codes.
  • Repair defects as needed so that welds will be in a condition to pass final inspection and testing according to the applicable commercial or military standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain work area, equipment and supplies, including welding equipment, in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Report any problems or difficulties to a leader or supervisor.
