A Day in the Life of a Sterile Compounding Supervisor: 

Works under the supervision of the Pharmacy Operations Manager and the pharmacist(s) on duty. Designated person of responsibility for USP 795, 797, 800 regulatory standards and all nonsterile, sterile, and hazardous medication compounding programs for Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. Provides all supervisory functions for the nonsterile and sterile compounding areas and technical functions.  Ensures department objectives for timely, efficient pharmacy care are met.

Here Is What You Will Be Doing:

  • Monitors the daily operations of the sterile and nonsterile compounding processes for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians to ensure accuracy and compliance with USP 795, 797, and 800 standards. 
  • Monitors packaging, sterile, and nonsterile compounding operations to ensure necessary inventory levels are maintained and oversees recordkeeping to comply with state and federal laws. 
  • Maintains expertise with and ensures compliance with Joint Commission, OSHA, and other regulatory standards.  Continuously monitors changes to USP 795, 797 and USP 800 requirements and implement changes using lean principles when needed.
  • Develops and conducts audits as necessary to ensure functions are performed as designed.
  • Ensures compounding equipment is clean, accurate, appropriate, and properly inspected and the compounding environment is properly maintained, isolated, and inspected.
  • Ensures ingredients have their correct identity, quality, and purity and opened or partially used containers are properly stored and inspected.  Ensures completed compounded sterile preparations are appropriately packaged, labeled, and assigned an appropriate BUD, and evaluated for safety.
  • Ensures deficiencies in compounding can be rapidly identified and corrected.
  • Ensures a written Quality Assurance program is established for monitoring, evaluating, correcting, and improving the activities, systems, and processes that support the preparation of compounded sterile preparations.  Ensures policies and procedures are prepared and updated per USP 795, 797 and 800 for the compounding, dispensing, delivery, administration, storage, and use of sterile pharmaceutical products appropriate for their facility.
  • Coordinates with Leadership and Pharmacy Education to ensure comprehensive training materials are developed and maintained to reflect and meet current standards of practice for USP 795, 797, 800.  Ensures that staff have completed required training and competencies that is documented in their records.  
  • Participates in performance improvement activities that include membership on all Pharmacy shared governance committees.
  • Acts as the Pharmacy Buyer in absence of the Pharmacy Buyer or as scheduled and acts as a Pharmacy Technician as needed.
  • Conducts unit inspections as assigned for Cheyenne Regional Medical Group (CRMG) and hospital-based clinics ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and medication storage not less than quarterly.

Here Is What You Will Need:

  • Three (3) or more years of hospital pharmacy technician experience
  • Three (3) or more years of sterile and non-sterile compounding experience
  • Pharmacy Technician License from the Wyoming State Board of Pharmacy prior to start date
  • 4 Months: Peer-to-Leader or equivalent course completion within four (4) months of start date
  • 4 Months: Lean Training within four (4) months of start date
  • 12 Months: Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Sterile Compounding Certification (CSPT) within twelve (12) months of start date
  • 12 Months: Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Hazardous Drug Management Certificate within twelve (12) months of start date
