The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is currently seeking an association/business professional to serve as Chief Operating Officer (COO). Serving under ASCE's Executive Director (ED) and acting under the authority of the Board of Direction, the COO is the second-in-command staff officer of the Society and its affiliates.

Founded in 1852, ASCE is one of the nation's largest professional societies, representing more than 150,000 members in 177 countries worldwide. Recognized for its technical and professional services, ASCE offers an extensive array of technical and professional conferences, continuing educational opportunities, career services for members at all stages of their career, and more. With deep technical capabilities, ASCE operates nine Technical Institutes developing some of the profession's most important codes, standards, and other technical products. ASCE is also the world's largest publisher of civil engineering content, and is well-known for its advocacy efforts, most notably its Report Card for America's Infrastructure. Headquartered in Reston, VA with a government affairs office in Washington DC, ASCE employs over 200 full-time staff members performing vital Society business including membership and marketing, continuing education program development, member community services, web and IT operations, sales and business development, conferences and events, publications, customer service, finance and accounting, and more. In addition to its nine semi-autonomous Technical Institutes, ASCE operates a separately incorporated 501(c)(6) Civil Engineering Certification organization offering specialty certification, and an affiliated ASCE Foundation.

The successful candidate will be responsible for broadly managing and overseeing the affairs of the Society. This includes ensuring operational efficiency across all aspects of the Society while delivering superlative value to its members. The COO will be responsible for regularly reviewing business operations, staffing, internal systems, and other elements of ASCE's operations and in conjunction with the ED and leadership, will identify and drive continuous improvement across the organization. The successful candidate will also work effectively with the ASCE Board of Direction, Executive Committee, Board Strategic Advisory Committee, and other essential leadership components of the Society and be capable of internally leading some of the Society's most important strategic initiatives.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Working in partnership with the ED, the Board of Direction, and senior leadership teams to oversee the Society's strategic plan and implement new processes and approaches to achieve it
  • Serving as the internal leader of the organization: coordinating the annual operations plan and budget; providing a strong day-to-day leadership presence; bridging national and regional operations and supporting staffing and organizational policy and compliance
  • Leading and managing the organization's many teams and divisions: the ASCE Foundation and fundraising initiatives, Grants and Business Development, the Institutes and technical and professional program areas, Finance and Accounting, Human Resources, and Information & Digital Strategy
  • Presenting to the Board of Direction at regular meetings and serving on high-level Society committees

Ideal candidates for the COO will have 15 years' experience in a senior leadership position with at least 7 years supervising senior staff and division heads, a demonstrated record of success managing complex organizations with a minimum $25 million annual budget and a large staff. Experience working with a membership driven nonprofit association organization is preferred, must understand the association/nonprofit environment, the roles and responsibilities of an association/engineering society, the roles of its members, and the dynamics of working in partnership with volunteer leaders. Candidates must also have strategic vision, business acumen, and a strong commitment to modelling our core values. Advanced degree and CAE are preferred.
