Information Systems (IS) and Cybersecurity Specialist - Intermediate

Job Objective: Responsible for providing the effective provisioning, installation / configuration, operation, and maintenance of SimIS network and computer systems hardware, software, and associated infrastructure. Participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure and on assigned projects. Ensures cybersecurity compliance and IT infrastructure integrity IAW Risk Management Framework (RMF) NIST 800 series Special Publication(s).

Responsibilities:

  • Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements and to support IT infrastructure or asset management applications.
  • Perform backup operations and system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, network, server and cloud resources, systems, and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups and recovery services. Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions, perform regular file archival and purge as necessary and create, change, and delete user accounts as required.
  • Apply patches and upgrades on a regular basis and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary and upgrade and configure system software that supports IT infrastructure applications or asset management applications per project or operational needs.
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks.  Identify approaches that leverage resources and provide economies of scale.
  • Provide system- and network-related solutions for SimIS IS assets.
  • Oversee the functioning of network equipment, follow maintenance standards, and develop new strategies to optimize server, switch, firewall and other infrastructure appliance operations.
  • Work with other IS team members, supervisors, and end-users to identify and work on connectivity problems, corporate cybersecurity training and issues, manage complex system requirements, and create RMF technical documentation for IS department and end users.
  • Work with other IS personnel and teams to ensure that SimIS computer systems and networks remain secure and reliable, monitor network availability, and collect / present data to enhance security and reliability and provide situational awareness.
  • Balance technical knowledge with network and data infrastructure experience to manage and maintain the SimIS cloud computing environment(s) and third-party cloud computing platforms.
  • Establish and configure networks for organization-wide use. Determine SimIS data management and information technology needs, recommend how to set up the network and provide users and the organization with constant access to servers and data storage sites and assist in operation and maintenance of the SimIS IS SharePoint site(s).
  • Determine areas of the IT infrastructure that need attention or expertise, coordinate support to resolve user-side issues, and foster collaboration for successful workflow of the IS department.
  • Maintain reliable system performance through active monitoring of error logs and user-reported network issues. Conduct regular tests to ensure that the system meets expectations for speed, security, and reliability. Also provide guidance to junior/intern technicians and administrators to enhance cybersecurity posture, upgrade IS infrastructure, conduct routine system audits, and make recommendations to improve reliability and performance.
  • Support the development and deployment of performance-enhancing measures throughout the network. Make key hardware / software recommendations, such as repairs, replacing or upgrading servers, routers, switches, phone system, printers or shifting databases to new software to improve network security, reliability, or speed.
  • Work with team members to design and oversee server-side elements of SimIS network infrastructure, to include installing network-wide malware protection software, configuring firewalls, and configuring databases and access on the back end.
  • Ensure all SimIS IS assets are tracked and accounted for and maintain an inventory and configuration management baseline for equipment and software.
  • Ensure that data remains intact, secure, and accessible in case of system crashes by conducting data backups. Determine when to back up or transfer data and take the network offline with the least amount of impact or interruption to the organization and verify data to ensure a successful backup.
  • Assist project teams with technical issues in the initiation and planning phases of standard project management methodology when required. These activities include the definition of needs, benefits, and technical strategy; research & development within the project life cycle; technical analysis and design; and support of operations staff in executing, testing and rolling-out solutions. Project participation is focused on ensuring IS and cybersecurity implementation meets applicable governing standards, laws, and regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Office environment. Some travel may be required.

Key Competencies /Requirements:

  • Requires an associate degree in related field such as computer or information science, engineering or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree in technical area is highly desired.
  • Requires minimum 2 – 4 years’ progressive experience in the related area as an individual contributor.
  • Certifications in Security+ or other related areas are highly desirable.
  • Must have Microsoft Office 365 administration experience with practical support of operations and maintenance for the suite of tools including Teams and SharePoint.
  • Proofpoint Essentials business cybersecurity solutions and/or N-able IT business management solutions (or similar IT software suite) experience is highly desirable.
  • Ability to develop requirements from policies and standards and create actionable plans for implementation.
  • Knowledge of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 800 series standards is highly desirable.
  • Ability to conduct troubleshooting, which requires both technical and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to support information security efforts, using best practices and procedures to protect data from intrusion, loss, and corruption.
  • Ample experience designing, implementing, and troubleshooting small to medium sized network architectures. Experience with Dell servers and Cisco Meraki appliances is highly desirable.

  • Knowledge of existing communications technologies and software.
  • Outstanding written (prose, editing, and presentation) and oral communications skills, especially the ability to articulate complex strategic situations and strategies and to effectively communicate to audiences with and without IS experience.
  • Candidate must be a U.S. citizen and have an ability to receive a SECRET DoD clearance through SimIS sponsorship.
