About Young Invincibles:

Young Invincibles (“YI”) is a non-profit working to expand opportunities for young Americans ages 18 to 34 and amplify the voice of our generation in the national political conversation. Founded by and for young adults in the summer of 2009 during the debate over health care reform, YI has quickly grown into a leading voice for young people on the issues of health care, higher education and employment. The organization has achieved major successes in areas ranging from the regulation of college health plans to Pell grants, and has successfully engaged hundreds of thousands of young adults online, through a network of over 100 partner organizations.

Position Description

Young Invincibles (YI), a national young adult research and advocacy organization working to advance economic opportunity for young adults, seeks a Human Resources (HR) Manager to be based either in its Washington, D.C. headquarters or the Los Angeles, CA regional office.  This permanent, full-time position is a great opportunity for a growing leader to improve and take to the next level the HR department of an organization of over 40 people in six offices across the country, multiple dynamic departments, with a focus on strengthening young adult leadership, all while working on today's most pressing economic policy debates.

This is a hands-on  position, leading and overseeing the human resources team, to include an internal coordinator, as well as external vendors. As the team continues to seek ways of improving YI’s systems, this position will have the opportunity to work with all parts of the organization. He/she/they must have a strong internal motivation and must be comfortable juggling multiple projects and tight deadlines. The operations team is at a critical moment in time - developing and implementing new and exciting ways to modernize and integrate within YI. This includes multi-office support. Young Invincibles currently has office locations in CO, IL, TX, NY, CA and DC. 

The HR Manager will be responsible for managing the organization’s HR processes like recruitment and onboarding, employee relations, HR policy development, benefits administration, performance management and employee metrics, and legal compliance.  The ideal candidate must be able to work efficiently and with a positive attitude in a fast-paced environment that requires adaptability to shifting priorities, a sense of urgency, attention to detail, and a commitment to excellence.  They must be comfortable in a start-up style atmosphere requiring organization, creativity and initiative while maintaining a sense of humor. 


Position reports to: Senior Director of Operations and Finance

Salary: $78,000

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Employee Recruiting, Retention and Development

  • Lead recruitment efforts including identifying and cultivating sources for obtaining quality and diverse talent.
  • Manage the talent acquisition process, which may include developing job descriptions, recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of qualified job applicants.
  • Lead the administrative onboarding process for new employees, including documentation, orientation, and training coordination, plus educating employees on organizational policies and procedures.
  •  Manage employee relations, address concerns, and provide guidance on disciplinary actions, conflict resolution and investigations, ensuring a supportive and respectful work environment.
  • Oversee employee offboarding process, including exit interviews, turning in technology, enrollment in COBRA and termination of benefits.

Payroll and Benefits Administration

  • Provide HR guidance when appropriate and act as point person for staff regarding HR matters.
  • Maintain all personnel files, policies and procedures and provide guidance and interpretation to staff.
  • Support management decisions by preparing, updating, and recommending policies and procedures.
  • Ensure timely timesheet submission and review and approve payroll for internal staff.
  • Work closely with a third-party HR vendor to communicate employee benefits programs; host open enrollment meetings, resolve benefit issues for staff and provide ongoing support.
  • Oversee the employee benefit program, including plan design and annual communication during open enrollment, as well as monitoring monthly changes.
  • Serve as the 401K plan administrator and handle all related tasks
  • Review and approve bi-monthly payroll, including all accruals.
  • Administer all leaves including communicating with employees, providing required paperwork, and updating payroll records accordingly.

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Develops and maintains knowledge of legal requirements related to HR and ensures YI’s compliance with relevant laws and regulations across all offices/states.
  • Manage and maintain the human resources information system (TriNet), keeping accurate and up-to-date records in accordance with YI’s legal, personnel and information needs.
  • Stay up to date on federal and multi-state/county employment laws and regulations and ensure organizational compliance.
  • Prepare and maintain records for audits related to payroll and HR.

Organizational and Staff Development

  • Develop and implement HR policies, procedures, and best practices that reflect legal requirements and the organization's values.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop the organization’s talent strategy and organizational culture strategy.
  • Work with department heads and hiring managers to develop staffing and retention strategies for the organization, including implementation of career pathways.
  • Identify training needs, design and implement training programs, including management training, personal skills development and organizational culture trainings, that enhance employee skills and foster professional growth.

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

  • Advise and consult with teams to align on key org-wide DEI initiatives to ensure alignment and direction in accordance with our DEI plan.
  • Champion diversity and inclusion efforts, developing and implementing strategies to promote an equitable workplace that values and respects individuals from all backgrounds.
  • Participate and/or serve on internal and/or external committees or programs related to DEI.

Performance Evaluation and Talent Management

  • Lead the design and implementation of performance appraisal systems, providing feedback and guidance to staff and managers.
  • Manage the staff performance evaluation process.
  • Work with stakeholders to improve the process moving forward.
  • Supervise the HR Coordinator.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Plan and facilitate internal meetings and committees, as needed. Examples may include assisting with the annual staff retreat, DEI committee, and employee engagement meetings.
  • This position is broadly intended to support the operations team’s capacity. As such, additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 3-5 years of relevant HR experience.
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience in human resources/nonprofit administration or other applicable field, demonstrating ability to build relationships, build trust, share ideas, and accomplish work. Help others become more effective through strengths, expectations, and coaching. Hold yourself and your team responsible for performance.
  • In-depth working knowledge of various HR disciplines, including recruitment, HRIS management, performance management, employee relations, leaves of absence; experience with compensation and benefits a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills: demonstrates exceptional proficiency in conveying ideas and information through articulate written expressions and clear verbal communication, fostering effective and engaging interactions.
  • Highly organized, motivated, and detail-oriented: Plans ahead and finds alternative paths when needed to accomplish a task.
  • Must show a high level of discretion with confidential and sensitive information. 
  • Strength in multi-tasking, goal-setting and problem solving, often under tight deadlines. 
  • Ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues by using sound judgment that is consistent with policies, procedures, regulations or federal and state laws.
  • A demonstrated commitment to advancing equity and proficiency at spotting and addressing issues of race and identity.
  • Knowledge of federal and state employment laws and other government compliance regulations is required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using technology in support of HR operations including HRIS, payroll systems (e.g. Zenefits/TriNet); Google Suite and DocuSign
  • Knowledge of human resources principles, labor laws and regulations, especially in a multi-state organization. Experience processing multi-state payroll preferred.
  • HR degree or certification preferred but not required.
