JOB SUMMARY:

As SMBC MANUBANK'S Strategic Initiatives and BHC Integration Lead, this individual is responsible for leveraging and adapting the SMBC Group Americas Division ("SMBC-AD") New Activities and other Risk Management Frameworks to manage strategic risk at SMBC MANUBANK. As a member of MB's Enterprise Risk Management ("ERM") team, this role reports into the Head of ERM and manages individuals responsible for providing Second Line of Defense ("2LoD") oversight for New Activities and Business Change Management. This individual is also responsible for collaborating with the SMBC-AD Risk Management Department to ensure the seamless integration of other risk management programs driven at the parentcompany level, within SMBC MANUBANK.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Own and oversee risk policy and governance processes for New Activities (new products, services, strategies, initiatives, and large-scale changes to the operating environment) at SMBC MANUBANK, in alignment with the SMBC-AD New Activities Policy.
  • Partner with other members of the Chief Risk Office and SMBC-AD Risk Management to streamline New Activities governance, oversight, and approvals workflows- ensure that all proposals are appropriately risk-assessed by 2LoD risk subject-matter experts ("SMEs") in the tool of record.
  • Own and enhance 2LoD New Activities procedures; own/develop 2LoD Business Change Management oversight procedures. Collaborate with the Business Change Manager in the digital banking unit to enhance controls around portfolio monitoring; tracking and monitoring conditions; and approvals to drive consistency of oversight activities across commercial bank and digital bank.
  • Re-design management committee reporting on New Activities and Business Change Management to ensure effective oversight and visibility into the portfolios.
  • Own and oversee adherence with the SMBC MANUBANK Business Change Management Policy. Collaborate with the First Line of Defense ("1LoD") Business Control Officer ("BCO") to further instill awareness and adoption of the SMBC MANUBANK Business Change Management program. Ensure that: policy requirements are understood; that sound processes have been established in the Commercial and Digital Banking Units; and represent the 2LoD risk team as part of the Governance Group.
  • Support the Head of ERM to drive continuity between various risk management activities, including but not limited to risk appetite; risk assessment; ongoing risk monitoring and reporting; and change management. Assist with the execution of other risk management programs by acting in a project management capacity, at the request of the CRO and Head of ERM.
  • Provide data and inputs into the Quality of Risk Management ("QRM") assessment process - to ensure that Risk Vertical (credit, liquidity, market, operational, etc.) SMEs have full insight into potential shifts in the inherent risk environment based on new activities and business changes.
  • Partner with other ERM teams and SMBC-AD to ensure that processes and controls related to new activities and business change management are captured within the Risk & Control Self-Assessment ("RCSA") - and partner with SMBC-AD Operational Risk Management and other ERM counterparts to execute the RCSA.
  • As a core member of the ERM team, contribute to the overall success of the team by supporting growth and development of direct reports and driving impactful engagement with stakeholders across the Three Lines of Defense.
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:
  • 10+ years of experience in financial services, with significant experience in enterprise risk management, operational risk management, and/or risk management and strategy consulting.
  • Deep risk understanding of enterprise risks, and the necessary building blocks of an effective ERM framework. Previous experience in internal audit and familiarity with internal control frameworks (COSO, ISO 31000, RIMS, COBIT) is required.
  • Proven track record of owning and managing projects with multiple stakeholder groups to completion.
  • Ability to influence up and down across divisions and within the parent-company construct; Willingness to negotiate internally and develop creative solutions, often at a senior level.
  • Must have experience designing effective controls, conducting risk and/or impact assessments, identifying control gaps, and remediating risk.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills; Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Must embody a team-oriented mindset and prioritize the success of the team over individual achievement; Experience managing and motivating people, delegating tasks, coaching, and serving as a mentor.
  • Certification in risk management a plus (CRMA, CERP, CRM).
  • Working knowledge of Regulation YY, as well as other applicable federal and state regulations, standard bank processes, and industry best practices.
