Job Summary

As a CNC Programmer and Machine Operator, working on new product development, you will work individually or as part of a small team to program and machine parts for research and development projects and prototypes. You will be required to share knowledge with R&D Engineers, produce a variety of parts, all of which must meet the dimensional specifications of the mechanical engineering drawings. In addition you will provide feedback on manufacturability of parts and offer suggestions that will lead to more robust and cost effective designs. An ideal candidate will be able to develop and execute the full machining process for complex parts from initial product design review through programming, tooling/ fixturing and process verification to delivering parts.

Other responsibilities of this position include performing preventative maintenance on CNC Lathe, CNC Mill, as well as other fabrication machinery, prototype assembly and drawing and design reviews. Also, the candidate will be required to maintain the cleanliness of work areas and participate in Powell's ongoing Safety Training. Key Responsibilities
  • Program, setup and operate a variety of CNC machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments for a prototype environment.
  • Measure, inspect and troubleshoot finished work pieces to ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Perform periodic machine maintenance on CNC machinery including daily and regular cleaning and light maintenance tasks.
  • Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas.
  • Provide knowledge and quality control by consistently delivering superior fabrication and manufacturing of parts and components.
  • Fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or production fixtures, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal and plastic properties, layout and machining procedures.
  • Recognize, deploy and properly use inserts, fixtures and tooling.
  • Comply with all quality policies, specifications, regulations and instructions.
  • Collaborate with engineers, production personnel, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
  • Willing to learn new CNC equipment operation including but not limited to CNC Laser, Press brake, and CNC Router.

Skills and Responsibilities

  • 2+ years experience programing and operating CNC machinery specifically vertical mills and multi spindle lathes
  • Knowledge of Okuma CNC equipment preferred
  • Working knowledge of CAM Software. Autodesk FeatureCAM preferred,
  • Ability to create full parts programs, transfer to machine, run programs and trouble shoot.
  • Familiarity with CAM post processors preferred
  • Understanding of manual programming (G codes/M codes).
  • Experienced in using precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, etc.
  • Ability to read and interpret Mechanical Engineering Drawings including working knowledge of GD&T
  • Understands material properties (rates of expansion, strength, hardness) and special machining requirements for copper, aluminum, steel and plastics.
  • Ability to run manual mill and lathe preferred
